Know your campus and community

It will really help you to settle in if you get to know your university campus and your local community. Start by looking at the UQ website for information on your campus – the facilities, services and building maps. Campus tours are run prior to and during the Orientation, and you can go on a virtual tour online.

For information on your local area, start with the Accommodation Services website which contains maps, transport guides and neighbourhood information for the areas around each campus. You may also want to find information on things to do in your area and in the wider region

Learn about public transport

Detailed information on the public transport system will be provided at your Getting Started session.

TransLink is the public transport network in South East Queensland which connects buses, trains and ferries. Under the TransLink system; fares, zones and concessions have been standardised across all types of public transport, resulting in a simple, easy to use network.

The TransLink website and the TransLink call centre (13 12 30 - 24 hours on weekends) provide free information on public transport options, costs and timetables. Phone the call centre or go on to the website to work out how to get to/from anywhere in South East Queensland by public transport.

Full-time tertiary students are eligible for ‘concession’ (student discount) fares, amounting to about 50% of the full fare on all TransLink services. You need a valid UQ student ID card to buy and use a student concession ticket. No other form of ID is acceptable. Please carry your Student ID card with you when you are travelling on a concession ticket – as you may be fined up to $150 if you do not. Most tickets can be bought on the bus or ferry and at QR train stations and ticket machines.

A GO Card providesthe most economical and convenient ticket when using public transport in in the Translink region. As soon as possible after arrival, you are advised to purchase anAdult (full fare) blue GO Card from Newsagents, rail stations and Translink ticketing machines.

You need to click your GO Card On and Off machines inside the entrance to buses and ferries. When using a City Train, you will find GO Card readers on railway station platforms of smaller stations and as you enter large railway stations, such as Central, Roma Street and Toowong.

After full time degree students enrol and obtain your UQ Student ID card  (showing the red QR logo) I have a sample image that can go in here)  you may take your Adult GO Card to the St. Lucia campus Newsagent (Building 4) for a refund of the adult GO Card, and to obtain a Student GO Card.

Single tickets can be bought on the bus or City Cat ferry and at QR train stations and ticket machines. Please note that Bus Drivers do not carry change and may not accept notes of over $10.00.

UQ Intercampus bus

There is also a UQ Intercampus bus that connects the St Lucia, Ipswich, and Gatton campuses.
