Attend a Getting Started session in the first 2 or 3 days after you first arrive . These sessions are designed to assist you with the smooth transition to campus life. Attendance at one session is compulsory for all new international students.
At this session you will:
-
Meet an International Student Adviser
-
Receive campus and locality maps
-
Find out about the process of enrolling / registering / changing classes
-
Learn how to get your student ID card
-
Get information on banking, key university facilities, student discounts on public transportation
-
Receive an Enrolment Guide
-
Receive an Orientation Flyer (with checklist and map)
After this session you will know the times of important university events and you can then start looking for permanent housing without missing out on vital university information.
Before attending a Getting Started session you need to either:
- Finalise your acceptance at UQ: pay your tuition fees and receive the Certificate of Enrolment (COE) for your university course; or
- For students with a conditional offer, first meet the English requirement for your course (IELTS of 6.5 or 7.0).
Getting Started session times
The times for Getting Started sessions are different on each campus. The program is repeated on weekdays only (not on Saturdays, Sundays or Public Holidays). Herston and other Brisbane students attend the St. Lucia campus Getting Started sessions.

Please be on time as the entire session contains important information. You will need to allow time to locate the room and be seated before the start of the session. If the room is full or you are late, you will be asked to come back to attend another session.
Please feel free to remain after the session and talk to an International Student Adviser who will be able to:
- Direct you to key university staff, or help you locate other students from your home country or region
- Answer questions about your course or acceptance at UQ, health services, family matters, student, cultural or religious organisations, or anything else that is of concern to you as a new international student
The International Student Advisers are here for you throughout your study program to help you solve problems as quickly as possible so you can get on with your studies.
Research students
Research higher degree students may arrive at any time during the year. Please note that Getting Started sessions are run once per week throughout the calendar year, and more frequently during the Semester 1 & 2 intake period (up to and including Week 2 of lectures).
