English courses

A range of English programs are organised by the Institute of Continuing and TESOL Education (ICTE-UQ), which is located on the 3rd floor of the Joyce Ackroyd Building (No.37 St Lucia campus map). These courses are available to all international students at UQ.

Before Semester begins:

English for Specific Purposes-Academic Communications Skills (ESP:ACS):

ESP:ACS is a three-week intensive English language program which is provided at no additional cost for all new UQ degree-enrolled international students. Eligible students must have been accepted into a UQ degree program and already met the minimum English language entry requirements. ESP:ACS is highly recommended for incoming students from a non-English speaking background. Registration by the due date is required. See more information,  including the registration form for Semester 1 and Semester 2.

Incoming international students are sent a link to this information sheet in their Acceptance What to Do next email, and should not try to register until they receive this correspondence from the UQ International Admissions Office. In order to get maximum benefit from this free ESP:ACS program, student should plan to arrive 10 days to 2 weeks before the start of the program so as to allow enough time to first recover from jet lag and organise permanent housing.

During Semester:

EAC (English for Academic Communication):

EAC is offered at no additional cost for enrolled UQ students from non-English speaking backgrounds. It is offered over several weeks of the lecture period and students may attend for each semester that they are enrolled. Students can select which stream they feel is relevant to their needs. The four streams are:

  • Stream 1: Writing for Academic Communication;
  • Stream 2: Speaking for Academic Communication, Pronunciation and Vocabulary Workshop;
  • Stream 3: Listening & Note-taking Skills, Understanding Australian English; or
  • Stream 4: Reading Strategies & Grammar Workshop.

EAC is delivered each semester on the UQ St Lucia campus. Courses are delivered at UQ Gatton and Ipswich campuses subject to minimum enrolment numbers. Registration by the due date is required.

See more information, including the registration form.

Part-time English Classes:

Throughout the year, The Institute of Continuing and TESOL Education (ICTE-UQ) runs a series of English classes for adults (students and their adult dependants aged 18 years and over). These classes are offered on a part-time basis in the evenings from 6-8pm. There is a cost for attendance at these courses and registration is made directly with ICTE-UQ. For further information about all ICTE-UQ courses go to the ICTE-UQ website or telephone (07) 3365 6565.
