Ambulance Cover

All temporary and permanent residents of Queensland have full ambulance cover. The cost for this is paid by a special levy charged quarterly and included in electricity accounts. It does not matter in whose name the account is under. The operator will determine if it is an emergency or routine. In relation to billing: all you need is proof of a Queensland address to show to the ambulance driver. This cover is for full time students only. Dependants’ emergency ambulance cover is provided by OSHC. If an ambulance is required in an emergency, an account will be forwarded to you. You should then forward the account to your OSHC provider. Do not use an ambulance instead of a taxi for routine travel to or from or between hospitals. Ambulances are used for emergency purposes only.

House calls

Some doctors make house calls in emergencies after hours; that is, before or after normal office hours. House calls are charged at a higher rate than the ‘schedule fee’ and normally need to be paid for upfront. OSHC Worldcare members can call the free call number on their membership cards for free 24 hour medical information. For example, you might enquire about whether a symptom may require immediate treatment or can wait until the next day. Medical advice will not be given over the phone.

Hospitals

Most hospitals listed below have a 24 hour emergency centre.

If you or your family need to be admitted as an ‘inpatient’ to a hospital for treatment, it is important that you talk with your OSHC provider as soon as possible, preferably before admission. For those with OSHC Worldcare phone the numbers on your membership card in an emergency. Emergency sections of public hospitals are free. Emergency sections of private hospitals charge ‘upfront’ for their services, before receiving treatment or before being admitted. Treatment at a private hospital usually costs more than the ‘schedule fee’. Keep the receipt and claim a refund from your OSHC provider.

If you ever need to go into hospital, see the Queensland Health website for more information, including hospital admission and practical information.
