Australian citizens and permanent residents who live in Australia can receive healthcare through the taxpayer funded Medicare system. Medicare pays for some hospital and medical services, including most of the payment of the cost of treatment in a public hospital, and provides reimbursement for visits to doctors. Your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) offers very similar services and benefits to that offered by the Medicare system.
Prescription medication
'Prescription medication' is restricted medicines that only doctors can recommend, using a special prescription (or script). You then take this prescription (or script) to a Pharmacy (or Chemist) to purchase the medication.
You may be able to make claims for prescription medication using your Overseas Student Health Cover. For more information, please see the Prescription medication factsheet on the OSHC Worldcare website.
