Technology needs people to give it direction. People like you. And the future needs you for dynamic careers worldwide.

But why should you study ICT? As ICT becomes part of daily life, the demand for ICT professionals is set to increase and a career in ICT can offer a range of benefits.

Strong job market

  • In April 2011, the Clarius Skills Index showed a shortfall of 2200 computing professionals to service industry and government needs. The index also reported salary increases of 10-20% for ICT professionals.

  • The ICT category of Australia's leading online job site seek.com.au consistently has more vacancies than any other category.

  • Employment of ICT professionals and managers has increased markedly over the past 14 years. ICT knowledge is increasingly a part of the necessary skills set for professionals, and employers now see ICT studies as a sign of academic breadth.

The opportunity to shape the future

  • As technology advances, what was impossible yesterday can be reality tomorrow. ICT is ever-evolving with jobs being developed to meet needs created in a wide range of new areas, and the industry needs people who are flexible, creative and unafraid of change.

Career choice and flexibility

  • There is an increasing need for ICT professionals to help improve our human infrastructure and the environment. Challenges such as sustainable development and global warming involve large-scale, complex systems to solve problems.

  • All organisations, from hospitals to hairdressers, need ICT solutions in one form or another. The Queensland Government's ICT Careers website summed it up: "There are over 150 job definitions within this industry - most of which you have probably never considered as an ICT career". Software designer, harware engineer, multimedia designer, enterprise architect, system security specialist, network analyst, games developer, IT consultant, and web developer are just a few of the diverse career options that ICT offers.

  • The need for qualified ICT professionals is both local and international, and ICT skills are readily transferable between jobs and organisations.
