John Ngui always wanted to learn more about the technology that would shape the world and he decided a career in ICT would fulfil his vision.
John won a UQ scholarship to study a Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) at The University of Queensland and has never looked back. He decided to study at UQ based on the University's excellent academic record, research collaborations and industry partnerships. John was also drawn to UQ's world-class programs, superb resources and opportunities for students.
“I chose UQ as it seemed like a great place to study, had a pro-active student body and sporting facilities that were among the best,” he said.
John selected the Bachelor of Information Technology at UQ as it had an excellent reputation amongst his peers and he had a choice of majors in many different areas of ICT that were underpinned by a strong research effort.
“The foundation I've gained and the concepts I’ve been exposed to have helped me tremendously,” he said. “The content of the program kept pace with the advancement of technology and market needs, which placed me in a strong position in the employment stakes,” John added.
John's Honours thesis paper was published in the Australian Conference on Software Engineering (ASWEC) in 2007, which he described a worthwhile challenge.
“The formulation of this thesis involved patience, hard work, in-depth research and perseverance all of which have assisted in my ICT career,” he said.
After graduation, John worked at the Earth Systems Science Computational Centre at UQ before moving to Suncorp as a business analyst.
“My main responsibility is to understand the needs of the business and to translate them into viable IT solutions for Suncorp,” he said. “I’m the middle man between the actual business and IT aspects of Suncorp.”
UQ IT graduates are extremely sought after by employers and John's UQ qualification has presented him with many opportunities.
“My advice to potential IT students is to constantly gain new knowledge and adapt to changing work environments to improve job performance and productivity,” he said. “Completing an industry-based student internship during your UQ studies will also assist in your future IT career,” he added.
