Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) studies explore how people use technology as well as the relationship between humans and computers. HCI is a multidisciplinary field incorporating computer science, ergonomics, visual design, psychology and human factors to help understand user needs and make computing more intuitive and user-friendly.

The Human-Computer Interaction major in the Bachelor of Information Technology develops knowledge and skills in the human-centred design of computing systems.

Course material covers networks, operating systems, interaction design, social computing, mobile computing and a physical computing design studio.

The Bachelor of Multimedia Design also focuses on HCI by exploring how to engage the user or audience.

Career pathways

HCI graduates are prepared for a broad range of positions in government, industry and academia. The long-term outlook for careers in HCI is excellent, as new products and increasingly ubiquitous technologies are developed.

Job opportunities include usability engineers, user experience designers, information architects, interface designers, human-factors specialists, web designers, requirements analysts and more.
