Policy

1.1        The University of Queensland operates a Multi-Faith Chaplaincy Service in accordance with the following three principles:
  • The Service is ecumenical and multi-faith in approach. Chaplains, representing different faiths and/or branches of one faith, agree to work cooperatively;
  • Chaplains appointed to the Service do not proselytise, but work in a wider faith and spiritual context.  Any Chaplain in the team may deal with students and staff in relation to their general pastoral or personal needs or crises.  The Chaplain will, however, refer them to a Chaplain of their own faith if the issue relates to matters relevant to their particular faith;
  • The Service and its Chaplains are available to all people who seek their counsel and support.
1.2        The Senate, acting on the advice of the Vice-Chancellor and the UQ Multi-Faith Chaplaincy Committee, may grant standing to faith bodies to join its Multi-Faith Chaplaincy Service.

1.3        Chaplains are nominated by a faith body which has previously been granted standing by the University. Chaplains are unpaid positions and, as such, the University’s policy in this regard will apply.

1.4        A Chaplain who meets the attributes criteria may be appointed by the Vice-Chancellor on the advice of the UQ Multi-Faith Chaplaincy Committee.

1.5        In rendering any services, the UQ Multi-Faith Chaplaincy Service is expected to work in conjunction with other support services for students and staff in the University of Queensland such Human Resources Division, Student and Administrative Services Division and Residential Colleges.

1.6        The UQ Multi-Faith Chaplaincy Service forms part of Student Services which is a Directorate within the Student and Administrative Services Division.
