Overview
This policy describes how the University will remunerate casual academic staff.
The conditions of employment for casual academic staff are derived from the University of Queensland Enterprise Agreement (Academic Staff) 2006. This policy may also apply to those staff employed under an Australian Workplace Agreement that specifically refers to this Policy.
The current rates of pay applicable to casual academic staff are set out at http://www.uq.edu.au/current-staff/index.html?page=11925&pid=11893
The rates of pay are determined by the academic activity. The major academic activities set out in Schedule IV of the Enterprise Agreement (Academic Staff) 2006 are lecturing, tutoring and marking.
Policy
The Head of School or Centre is responsible for ensuring that all course or program co-ordinators and/or staff who manage casual academic staff are familiar with the conditions and rates of pay applicable to casual academic staff and the provisions of this policy. They are also responsible for ensuring that all casual academic staff are familiar with the casual academic staff policy 5.41.10 which includes information on recruitment, induction, resources and facilities, and staff development for casual academic staff.
The Head of the School or Centre should also ensure that casual academic staff are aware of the associated work time involved in each hour of contact time for lecturing and tutorials, including marking, student consultation, preparation time and any other related matters expected and paid for per lecture, tutorial or other activity in accordance with the Award. Casual academic staff should be given a duty statement that specifies the tasks they are to perform.
In general, scholarship holders have employment restrictions, which may include a restriction on the number of paid hours worked. For further information on scholarships, refer to http://www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/index.html?page=9804&pid=9790
