My opponents have said there would be men who would claim their wives had been indecently assaulted by Caelius on their way back from dinner. They will be men of substance who will dare to say this on oath: they have to acknowledge that they never, even by any private meeting and settlement, began to obtain legal satisfaction for such grave wrongs.
But, gentlemen of the jury, you already foresee in your minds the whole nature of this attack, and, when it is launched, you will be obliged to repel it. Marcus Caelius is not being accused by the same people as attack him: the shafts are hurled against him openly, but they are supplied by a hidden hand.
