Indeed, if you are willing to attend diligently and make a true assessment of this case as a whole, you will decide, gentlemen of the jury, that no one would have stooped to this prosecution had he any choice, and that, after so stooping, he would have entertained no hope did he not depend on someone's intolerable passions and excessively bitter hatred. But I pardon Atratinus, a thoroughly decent and excellent young man and my friend. He has the excuse of duty or necessity or his tender years. If he was willing to prosecute, I put it down to duty; if he was bidden, to necessity; if he entertained some hope, to his boyish inexperience. But the other accusers must not only go unpardoned but also be keenly resisted.
