Accordingly, gentlemen of the jury, I'm not alarmed by the things which I perceived from the words of the accusers are now being fashioned to bolster their case: I rely on your commonsense. They claimed there would be a senator giving evidence to say he had been beaten up by Caelius during the pontifical elections.

If he comes forward, I shall ask him first why he did not prosecute immediately, and then, if he preferred to make that complaint rather than prosecute, why he was trotted out by you instead of his own self, and why he preferred to complain so long afterwards instead of straightaway.

If he answers me shrewdly and to the point, then I'll ask finally from what source that senator flows. If he turns out to be his very own origin and source, perhaps I'll be impressed, as usual. But suppose on the other hand he's a streamlet summoned up and drawn from the very fountain-head of your prosecution. I'll rejoice that, although your prosecution has such influence and such resources to rely on, just one lone senator has been found to do you a favour.
