STUDYING ANCIENT GREEK USING THE INTERNET

Before you can begin studying an Ancient Greek subject using this Internet medium, there are certain things which you must do.

This subject has been web-developed for study using a personal computer (PC) with an appropriate web browser installed. For your computer to be able to deliver the subject using correct Ancient Greek characters, you must be using the correct browser, and you must have installed certain new fonts.

If you do not have your own computer, or do not have access to one which you can configure in accordance with the instructions on this page, then you should access this subject from a computer in the Library on campus at St Lucia. Computers with Internet Explorer and the necessary fonts installed are to be found in Training Room 3 on Level 2 of the Library.

Downloading and Installing the Browser

Considerable experimentation and consultation has revealed that Netscape Navigator has trouble interpreting fonts coded in "Symbol" script (such as the special fonts you will need for this subject) rather than in "Western" script when the document has a mixture of both types of font (as is the case for this Ancient Greek subject where both English and Ancient Greek text is included). While this problem may be overcome by the use of much more coding in the documents used and by changing the configuration of Netscape Navigator appropriately each time you wish to view such a document, a much simpler solution is for the user to use Microsoft's Internet Explorer, all versions of which from 3.02 onward will handle mixed fonts with no problems.

You will therefore need to have Internet Explorer installed on your computer in order to study this subject.

If you already have Internet Explorer (version 3.02 or later) installed, you may now proceed to download and install the required fonts (see below).

If you currently have Netscape Navigator only installed on your computer, you should follow the instructions below to download and install Internet Explorer version 3.02. You may, of course, choose to install a later version, particularly if you intend to make that your principal browser rather than Netscape navigator. However, version 3.02 will do all that is needed for your Ancient Greek study, and it takes up less space on your hard drive. Before you start, it may be an idea to print this page so that you can follow the instructions easily.

  1. Create a new directory on your hard drive (eg. c:\download)
  2. Go to the local download site "Tucows" (see below "To download click here");
  3. Click on "Windows 95/98"
  4. Under "Browsers and Accessories", click on "Browsers"
  5. Scroll down to "Internet Explorer 3" and click on that title
  6. A new screen appears. After a pause, a dialog box will appear telling you that you have started the download; click on "Save File" at the bottom of that box. (If the download does not start, follow the instructions on the screen.)
  7. A new dialog box will now appear. In the small "Save in" box at the top of the dialog box, you will need to show the name of the directory into which the font file is to be downloaded. For example, if you created the directory Download, you could either -
    1. type in the directory, eg. c:\download
      OR
    2. Use the small arrow at the end of the box to locate the directory
  8. Now, click on the "Save" button.
  9. A dialog box will now appear, showing you the progress of the download. The download may take some time: the slower your modem, the longer the time.
  10. When the download is complete, the progress box will disappear, and the downloaded file is now in the directory you created.
  11. You will now have an .exe file in the directory you created. To install the browser, open Windows Explorer, select the directory, and double click on the new file to install the browser. Note: If you wish to continue using Netscape for your Internet browsing and use Internet Explorer only for this subject, when you are asked during installation if you wish to make Internet Explorer your default browser, choose "No".
To download, click here.

Once you have installed Internet Explorer, you may then proceed to download and install the required fonts.

Downloading and Installing the Fonts

The fonts you will need are available to you now, and may be downloaded from the Department's website. Note that the fonts must be downloaded using Internet Explorer, NOT Netscape. To find detailed instructions on downloading, installing and testing those fonts, click here. If you are using a modem, you may have to wait a short while for all the explanatory images to load.

Once you have installed Internet Explorer and the necessary fonts, you may return to the subject's Introductory Page.
