Ancient Greek Fonts Download

This page will give you detailed instructions on how to download, install and test the fonts necessary for your web browser to be able to display Greek text and to enable you to print out hard copy of that text if need be.

The instructions assume that you are using a PC with Windows 95 or Windows 98 installed, and that you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer (v.3.0 or later) as a browser. If you also have Netscape as your browser, do NOT use it to download the fonts, as Netscape corrupts the font files during download. If you experience trouble downloading the fonts, email g.paltridge@uq.net.au for assistance.

If you are an experienced computer user, much of the following will be familiar to you, and may be ignored. However, if you are a new user, the illustrations of screens given below will help you through the process.

It is strongly suggested that you print out this page, and then have the print-out beside you as you follow the directions.

WARNING: BEFORE YOU DOWNLOAD. Included in the fonts you are about to download are fonts licensed for your use as an enrolled student only. You may NOT give the font files to anyone else. If you wish to produce your own documents relevant to your studies/research, you will need to obtain the relevant keyboard drivers, which may be obtained by purchase only from Magenta Limited in Athens, whose website is http://www.magenta.gr/. Magenta Limited can also provide their new multi-accent system using Unicode fonts.

Downloading the fonts to your computer

The instructions for downloading the font files apply to Windows 95 or 98 users. There will be some variation for users with Windows 3.1x or Windows for Workgroups 3.11 on their computers.

To commence the download process, first create a new directory (or folder) on your hard drive. For example, you could call the directory "Newfont". This would create a directory c:\Newfont, which will be assumed to be the case in the instructions which follow.

Now click here.

You should now see a screen like this:

With your mouse click on the file name syg.ttf

You should now see a dialog box similar to this:

Save file dialog box

Make certain that under the question "What would you like to do with this file?", the dot is in the small circle in front of "Save it to disk". If the dot is in the circle in front of "Open it", click on the other circle to move it. Now click on the "OK" button.

You should now see a dialog box similar to this:

Directory dialog box

You will see that against "File name" at the bottom of that dialog box, syg.ttf appears. In the small "Save in" box at the top, you will need to show the name of the directory into which the font file is to be downloaded. For example, if you created the directory Newfont, you could either -

  1. type in the directory, eg. c:\Newfont
    OR
  2. Use the small arrow at the end of the box to locate the directory
Now, click on the "Save" button.

The font file has now been downloaded to your computer.

Repeat this process for the other four font files.

If necessary, click on the "Back" button of your browser to return to this page.

Installing the fonts on your computer

The instructions for installing the font files apply to Windows 95 or 98 users. There will be some variation for users with Windows 3.1x or Windows for Workgroups 3.11 on their computers.

Click on the "Start" button, and select "Settings", "Control Panel".

When the "Control Panel" box appears, double-click on the icon called "Fonts". You should now see a dialog box like this, which shows a list of the fonts already installed on your computer:

Fonts list dialog box

Note that the contents of main frame in the dialog box may be different, depending upon how it has been configured on your computer; for example, it may show graphics for each font instead of a list of them. This does not matter.

Click on "File" (on the top menu), and then on "Install new font".

You should now see the following dialog box:

Add font dialog box

You should now indicate the directory to which the font files have been downloaded (eg. c:\Fontfile). Make sure that in the box below "Drives", "c:" is showing. If you have created the directory on another drive (eg, d:), you should click on the arrow to the right and then on the correct drive. Next, you should indicate the correct directory in the "Folders" box, by clicking on it; you may have to double-click on the "c:\" at the top of the "Folders" box, then scroll to the correct directory (eg. Newfont), and then double-click on that directory.

The five font files which you downloaded should now appear in the "List of fonts" window of the box. Use your mouse to block the five files, and then click on the "OK" button.

The fonts should now be installed. Click on the "X" at the top right of the "Fonts" dialog box to close it, then click on the "X" at the top right of the "Control Panel" box to close it.
