Information for Staff

The School of History, Philosophy, Religion and Classics is a unit within the Faculty of Arts, and incorporates four main disciplinary areas:

History - Australian, British and European, Asian, Pacific, the Middle East, the United States, Russia, and thematic areas.

Philosophy - the appraisal of argument, the nature of thinking, the nature of the mind that thinks and what it thinks about

Studies in Religion - the study of various religious and spiritual experiences and practices, including the study of the major world religions, as well as new religious movements, religion and the environment, paganisms and esotericism

Classics and Ancient History - Ancient Greek and Latin, and the history of early Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome and the Celts.

Each of those areas offer a number of study programs and a multitude of courses, enabling students to design their studies with considerable flexibility.

However, the disciplinary areas interlock in many ways. When selecting courses, therefore, students are able to select courses from different areas depending upon their own personal interests.
