Vital statistics and cause of death information is the cornerstone of any health information system as it guides policy, planning and resourcing of health priorities.

Summary

Many countries are unaware of the poor functioning of their vital statistic systems and the measures that can provide information on population health status.

To assist countries to evaluate and strengthen the functioning of their vital statistics systems the Hub in collaboration with WHO and HMN developed and piloted an assesment tool.  Uncertain of its relevance for small pacific island countries with poorly developed systems the Hub launched a program of work to:

  • Collaborate with other development and academic institutions to oversee the application of the Rapid Assessment Tool to identify key vital statistic priorities.
  • Develop a cause of death, quality assessment tool and manual.
  • Develop a comprehensive civil registration and vital statistics resource kit.
  • Work in partnership with development partners to support regional initiatives to improve vital statistics such as the Pacific Vital Statistics Development Initiative
