It is with great excitement that we announce the launch of the Heron Island Research Station Green Office Initiatives. The Green Office is a program within UQ Sustainability that promotes environmental awareness and sustainable practices in the workplace and is this year celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Located within the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and nestled within a National Park, promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices is of great importance to the Station. Late in 2015 Heron Island Research Station joined the Green Office Network with staff member Kimberly Condon elected as a Green Office Representative. Since then, we’ve been busy developing some initiatives to improve waste management and sustainable practices on the Station.

This week we are rolling out new waste management bins across the facility to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. You will see the new bin stations throughout the facility, clearly labelled with their waste stream. In addition to the standard mixed recyclables we are introducing soft plastic recycling, battery recycling and cable tie recycling. In order to help reduce paper towel usage we will also be offering tea towels in our laboratories.

These initiatives are just the first step in the program. Be sure to check in with our staff when you’re next on Island to find out what initiatives will be happening next. We’ll also keep you updated through our Instagram account, website and mailing list. We are always interested in your ideas so let us know about any great initiatives that we can investigate for the facility.

Ultimately, for these initiatives to be a success we need your support, so please get involved and support us!
