Booking

 
Please book as far in advance as possible. Non UQ visitors may book up to 12 months in advance and you are encouraged to book for the following year before you leave the station.

Heron Island is a remote island with limited access.  We strongly recommend you purchase travel insurance, particularly if you are a large group or have connecting flights.

Please notify us immediately if there are any changes to your bookings.

Staff assistance is available from 8 am to 4 pm. If you require assistance outside those hours, please so indicate on your booking form. Charges will apply.

Steps to booking at HIRS

UQ Personnel:

  • Check Availability - contact the station directly via email (hirs@uq.edu.au), fax(+ 61 7 4972 4173) or phone (+61 7 4978 1399) to check dates and facilities are available.
  • Apply - complete the Booking Application Form and email or fax to station.
    • Attach RISQ - a completed RISQ (Requisition for Internal Services Quote) is required to accompany a booking. The first completed RISQ form received will have booking preference.
    • Students - students must include their supervisor's name and school/centre on the booking form.
    • HIRS Guest Details Template - to ensure all necessary information is provided, you may use this template
  • Catering - if you wish to hire a caterer, please contact them as soon as possible.

Non - UQ Personnel:

  • Apply - complete the Booking Application Form and email or fax to the station.
  • Deposit Confirmation - confirm your reservation with a 10% deposit (non-refundable). The first deposit received will receive booking preferences.
  • Catering - if you wish to hire a caterer, please contact them as soon as possible.

Note: If your total amount is going to be under $500AUD we require payment up front in full.

Important notes:

  • Visitors must be at least 15 years old.
  • The University of Queensland is a workplace. Families are not permitted to stay at the Research Stations. Delaware North's Heron Island Resort offers reduced rate accommodation for family members of HIRS users. Please contact the HIRS for details.
  • Permits for research, teaching or commercial filming must be obtained well in advance of your arrival on the island and a copy supplied with your booking form. See Permits (39kb, pdf) for detailed information.
