The Faculty of Health Sciences has been extremely successful in gaining University and national recognition of our excellent teachers.

Awards, grants and fellowships that recognise excellence in teaching and learning are awarded by UQ and through national bodies, such as the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC).

The ALTC was established in 2004 to promote learning and teaching in Australian higher education. Excellence in teaching in higher education is acknowledged and fostered through the ALTC award schemes. Winners of UQ awards for teaching and learning excellence are invited to submit their projects for consideration by UQ's ALTC Selection Committee and may then be submitted for national awards and citations. Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning

These citations were received as part of the Australian Government’s Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education annual awards. They recognise longstanding commitment by university staff who have shown outstanding innovation and leadership.

2010:  Associate Professor Malcolm Parker, School of Medicine, for preparing future doctors to manage the ethical, legal and professional obligations and challenges of 21st Century medical practice, through fifteen years of inspiring leadership

2009:  (1) Dr Carrie Ritchie (Faculty of Health Sciences) - For the development and co-ordination of innovative, responsive programs and courses in the health sciences that reflect workforce needs.

2008:  (1) Dr David Jenkins, (School of Human Movement Studies) - For sustained excellence in teaching exercise science to large undergraduate classes with a focus on social and professional engagement.
           (2) Associate Professor Sylvia Rodger, Dr Gail Woodyatt, Dr Julie Marinac, Dr Pauline Watter and Associate Professor Jenny Ziviani (team nomination from the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences) – For sustained excellence in provision of innovative learning experiences for allied health students in promoting inter-professional knowledge, practice and teamwork.

2007:  (1) Dr. Jason Connor and team (School of Medicine) - for the development of an innovative clinical communications skill program for medical students.
            (2) Dr Murray Phillips, (School of Human Movement Studies) - for the design and delivery of innovative, pedagogical strategies that raise critical awareness of sport, physical activity and health in large lecture settings. 

2006:  (1) Louise McCuaig, of the School of Human Movement Studies - for innovative health promoting pedagogies that will increase the efficacy of health education in schools.
           (2) Dr Diann Eley and and Associate Professor Peter Baker (School of Medicine) - for enabling students to discover the nature and essence of effective rural medical practice through a peer-based learning process using modern information technology.


Australian Learning and Teaching Council Awards for the Enhancement of Student Learning

2006: Rural Clinical Division Project Team - An Integrated Package of Innovative Rural Medical Education: Enhancing Student Outcomes and Increasing the Rural Medical Workforce

This project, designed to improve rural training outcomes for medical students and enhance rural medical workforce recruitment and retention was also awarded a 2006 UQ Teaching and Learning Excellence Award. Members of the Rural Clinical Division Project Team were (pictured L to R) Dr Louise Young, Associate Professor Peter Baker, Professor David Wilkinson and Dr Diann Eley .

2007: Dr. Desleigh deJonge and Team (School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences) – The industry experience – engaging graduating OT students in authentic industry partnerships.
