Clinical career
- Prof Chenery has assisted people who have lost the ability to communicate as the result of a sudden neurological injury such as stroke or head injury or who have a slowly progressive neurological condition such as Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease.
Research career
- Prof Chenery examines the nature of language processing and communication in both healthy people and clients who have suffered neurological damage.
- Her research is based on the integration of comprehensive models of language processing within a neurobiological framework - how is language processed in the brain, what goes awry as the result of brain damage, and how can we best rehabilitate those people who have lost their language as the result of brain damage.
- She also researches in the area of health workforce innovation and reform, interprofessional learning and practice, and e-health competency.
Deputy Dean Academic
- Prof Chenery participates in the executive level leadership of the Faculty and the University and provides high level external representation of the University and the Faculty locally, nationally and internationally.
- She oversees the strategic development and implementation of teaching and learning initiatives across the Faculty and evaluates their outcomes.
- She provides advice and leadership in relation to the development of new academic programs and oversees the enhancement of the student experience within the Faculty.
Recent significant accomplishments
Academic lead in the establishment of UQ Health Care, a not-for-profit company owned by The University of Queensland delivering integrated, multidisciplinary, patient-centered primary care. The clinics were set up with $17.5 million awarded by the Australian Government’s GP Super Clinics Division as part of its National Health Reform Agenda.
- Academic lead in The University of Queensland’s successful application to Health Workforce Australia for $12 million in capital/infrastructure and $20 million in recurrent funds to grow clinical training and education capacity in the sector.
- Chief Investigator on research grants (total value $1.173 million) that have resulted in the creation of training programs (currently being disseminated via You Tube®) for care-givers of people with dementia. These programs have been devised and their efficacy confirmed using a randomized control trial.
- Invitee to the “Second National Indigenous Health Equality Council Indigenous Health Workforce Forum: Building a sustainable Workforce for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health” and the National Health and Medical Research Council’s and Alzheimer’s Australia workshop entitled “Translating Dementia Care Research into Better Practice”.
