About Health Sciences
The Faculty of Health Sciences is a world leader in health education and research. More than $300 million is being invested in new infrastructure providing state-of-the-art facilities, such as the Pharmacy Australia Centre of Excellence and Australia’s largest tertiary oral health centre which is due to open in 2012.
Learning
The Faculty has the widest range of health study areas available in an Australian university. Our academics include award-winning lecturers who combine teaching with internationally recognised research to create a cutting edge learning environment.
All health students undertake clinical or industry placements in a variety of healthcare settings, including major hospitals and the University’s own dentistry and rehabilitation clinics, as well as newly established multidisciplinary primary care centres. Placement opportunities are also offered with partner healthcare organisations internationally.

Discovery
Faculty research covers a broad range of disciplines, which facilitates powerful multidisciplinary collaborations which are embedded in UQ’s powerhouse biomedical environment. Our researchers work across all major fields of health and have a reputation for research that translates from “bench to bedside”. Many researchers are internationally recognised leaders in their fields. They work with talented young research teams generating lifesaving new discoveries and treatments. The quality and impact of their work is highly ranked internationally.
In the 2011, UQ Medicine was ranked 33rd in the World in the QS World University rankings. Clinical medicine and pharmacy were ranked in the 51-75 band in the 2011 Academic Rankings of World Universities. In the 2010 Excellence for Research in Australia (ERA) survey, 10 specialised areas of UQ Medical and Health Science research were ranked above world standard, while UQ Cardiovascular Medicine & Haematology and Neurosciences research was rated well above world standard.

The Faculty has research partnerships with some of the world’s most prestigious organisations, including the World Health Organisation, Harvard University, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Atlantic Philanthropies and large biotechnology and multinational pharmaceutical companies.
Major teaching affiliations with healthcare providers in Queensland, the United States, Asia and Europe create a range of international study, network and career opportunities for students. Special Interest Groups are being established with the vision of our alumni creating a ‘Global Healthcare Community’ across a number of strategic international locations.

In the 2010, UQ Life Sciences and Medicine was ranked 40th in the World in the QS World University rankings.
- No 42: in the World’s Top 50 Clinical, Pre-Clinical and Health Universities in 2010
- No 38 in the World’s Top 50 Life Sciences universities in 2010
- Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Academic Ranking of World Universities in Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy – 2010
- In the 51-75 band for clinical medicine and pharmacy in the 2011 Academic Ranking of World Universities.
UQ ranks inside the World Top 100, rising to 86 in 2011 and is one of 3 Australian Universities who made the top 100. UQ is the only Queensland university ranked in the top 100. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2010-2011 rank UQ at 81.
