Throughout your program at university you'll be required to write a variety
of assignments. There are several reasons why writing assignments is important:
- The first is that assignments will probably be a major form of assessment.
- The second is that assignments help you develop and practise communicating
your ideas in written form. This is a skill that your future employers will
expect, regardless of the field that you eventually work in.
- The third is
to help you develop skills associated with writing, such as gathering
and evaluating information (facts/ideas/theories/knowledge) that you can then
use for your own purposes.
The most common types of assignments that you will encounter during your program
are:
- Essays
- Reports
- Case studies
- Literature reviews
- Scientific writing
- Reflective writing.
Regardless of differences in format, all academic writing requires you express
an informed point of view on a given topic. To come to an
informed point of view you’ll need to read widely and critically.
