 Writing

Throughout your program at university you'll be required to write a variety of assignments. There are several reasons why writing assignments is important:

  1. The first is that assignments will probably be a major form of assessment.

  2. The second is that assignments help you develop and practise communicating your ideas in written form. This is a skill that your future employers will expect, regardless of the field that you eventually work in.

  3. The third is to help you develop skills associated with writing, such as gathering and evaluating information (facts/ideas/theories/knowledge) that you can then use for your own purposes.

The most common types of assignments that you will encounter during your program are:

  • Essays
  • Reports
  • Case studies
  • Literature reviews
  • Scientific writing
  • Reflective writing.

Regardless of differences in format, all academic writing requires you express an informed point of view on a given topic. To come to an informed point of view you’ll need to read widely and critically.
