This section of the site explains many of the skills you will need to master - or at least use proficiently - if you want your study to be successful. It covers:

  • Studying at university. How to become a ‘self-directed’ learner.
  • Academic standards. How the emphasis at university is not simply the reproduction of knowledge.
  • Understanding academic expectations. A discussion of what resources can help you understand these expectations.
  • Thinking critically. How to use ‘critical thinking’ to develop an unbiased view of a topic, allowing you to offer a balanced opinion or make an informed decision.
  • Reading. How to read for a general overview, an assignment topic, or to supplement notes.
  • Note taking. How to get organised, engage with the material, and review your notes.
  • Graphic organisers. How to use mind mapping and concept maps to organise your information and ideas graphically.
  • Writing. Explanation of essay writing, case studies, literature reviews, reflective writing and scientific writing.
  • Jargon. The do’s and don’t’s of using jargon (a discipline’s specialised vocabulary).

  • Exam preparation. How to become ‘exam-ready’ – getting on top of the subject, and employing exam know-how.
