 Information literacy

To avoid feeling overwhelmed by the information explosion, you must learn how to:

decide when and why you need information; Clearly describe the type of info you're looking for; Find relevant info; Recognise high quality and low quality sources of info; Recognise repetitive info; Filter out info that is not relevant to you; Critique and synthesise info; File info in ways that makes sense to you; Recognise when info overload is taking hold of you and take steps to re-balance yourself

Managing information overload is part of a broader skill set called information literacy.

Information is not the same thing as knowledge, but information literacy is a crucial skill in the process of knowledge creation.

If you're not sure how to develop your information literacy skills, the UQ Library is the best place to start. The Library has developed lots of resources and expertise to help you find and use the vast amounts of information available.

You'll find activities to develop your research and information skills in the Library and information literacy section of this kit.
