Some of the challenges of distance study

Distance study can be very convenient if you live a long way from a university campus, or if you need a flexible study schedule to accommodate work and family commitments.

However, distance students face different challenges than on-campus students.

challenges: Feelings of isolation, not feeling like a real student; Limited contact with lecturers, tutors and other students; Limited access to the internet; Limited access to support services, eg learning advisers, computer training library, training, counselling

"Having studied internally before, I know internal students get more insight into exams and what's required in essays than external students."

Don't be afraid to ask for help BEFORE it's too late

Students are often unaware of the help and support that's available at UQ. Many distance students try to solve problems on their own, or don't ask for help until the last minute. If you're feeling unsure about something, seek help early.

Communicate with other students

Other students can be a great source of information and inspiration. If any of your courses have online discussion boards or live chat rooms, take advantage of this opportunity to share ideas and information with other students.

"I feel less of a burden when I ask a student via the chat room than when I ask a lecturer."
