Many of UQ’s distance courses offer a combination of printed learning
materials, residential schools, and online learning. The online component
takes place in a virtual learning environment created by the software
Blackboard.
Check the course profile for each of your courses to find out if
there’s a Blackboard site for that course.
Blackboard can be used in many ways. Lecturers frequently use Blackboard
for these things:
- Communication.
Chat rooms can be set up for live chat sessions, while online conferences
(or discussion boards) are popular places to leave messages that
students can read at any time during the course.

- Lecture notes used in on-campus lectures.
These can be a useful addition to the printed study guide.
Remember that on-campus students sometimes have different assignments
and practicals, so don’t get confused.
- Assignment drop box. If lecturers use this
feature, you can submit assignments online instead of by ordinary
mail.
