From the UQ Student Recruitment team
It is not too late to have the UQ Student Recruitment team visit your school to present to school groups in Years 10 – 12. In Term 4, our Transitions presentation is particularly relevant for Year 12 students heading into tertiary education.
UQ Transition Presentation
This presentation aims to provide Year 12 students with helpful advice on the transition from high school to university. The presentation addresses common concerns among senior students including changing QTAC preferences, university enrolment, upgrading and deferment. It also outlines the major differences between high school and university, gives tips for first year uni students and highlights the range of student support services available at UQ. To arrange for a transition presentation at your school in Term 4, please contact the UQ Student Recruitment Team.
Personal Campus Tours
A guided, on-campus tour is a fantastic opportunity to get a closer look at university life, ask questions, talk to current students and see the facilities first-hand. The Student Recruitment team organises campus tours for individuals, families and larger groups throughout the year. Tours generally take up to one hour with information packs provided for all visitors. To book a campus tour, please contact the UQ Student Recruitment team.

Important Application Information
Unique Dual Program codes
Unique QTAC codes now exist for all dual programs at UQ. When selecting preferences through QTAC, students can simply enter the code which directly corresponds to the dual program of their choice. All codes for UQ dual programs can be found on the following QTAC webpage: UQ Dual Program codes
UQ Deferment Policy
Deferment of a place at university is now available for a period of up to two years to students applying to UQ who are offered a Commonwealth Supported Place at the beginning of the year. To request deferment, students must respond to their QTAC offer using the deferment option by the offer response date specified.
Deferment will be automatically approved and UQ will send written notification in September the following year advising students of the enrolment process. Students will not need to re-apply through QTAC to take up their deferred course unless they wish to apply for other QTAC preferences. Requests to postpone commencement until Semester 2 should be referred to the relevant Faculty office administering the program.
Students currently on deferment will have received notification from UQ in September advising of the enrolment process to begin their studies in Semester 1, 2010. Alternately, they will be given the option to extend their deferment for a further year.
Deferments are not available for students who are offered a place for second semester.

UQ-Link and Wotif Equity Scholarships
UQ is pleased to announce that in 2010 there are 100 Wotif scholarships valued at $6,000 per year for up to four years. These equity-based scholarships will become part of the UQ-Link program and will be awarded to students who meet two or more of the following criteria:
- Indigenous Australian
- Financial hardship
- Regional isolation
- First in family status (i.e. students whose parents/guardians have no post secondary qualifications)
The UQ-Link Program allows current school-leavers to be considered for special admission to higher education if they have experienced educational disadvantage as a result of financial hardship.
Eligible UQ-Link applicants who receive a place at UQ are automatically considered for a UQ-Link Scholarship with no separate application form required. UQ-Link Scholarships are valued at $3000 per year for up to four years. All UQ-Link students will also be automatically considered for a Wotif equity scholarship.
UQ-Link application forms, flyers and information booklets can be downloaded from the web link below.
ICT Enabling Scholarships Program
In view of a growing shortage of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) graduates, The University of Queensland is encouraging and enabling school-leavers to join programs leading to careers in the information and communications technology industry.

New Courses and Programs website
An upgraded version of the UQ Courses and Programs website is now available online. After extensive research and development, the website has been redeveloped, making researching student options at UQ much simpler.
Among the many improvements are greater functionality and more user-friendly interface. Refined search capabilities means users can search courses and programs by campus, faculty, delivery mode, study level, nationality, OP or rank, semester or study abroad pre-approved courses, for example.

New Diplomas for Undergraduates
To enhance the study options available to students, UQ has introduced three undergraduate diplomas in Music, Languages or Global Issues, which can be studied concurrently with their undergraduate degree.
Regardless of the discipline they are pursuing, diplomas provide undergraduate students with an opportunity to broaden their studies in one of these specialist fields.
Once receiving an offer of a place in a bachelors degree at UQ through QTAC, students apply direct to UQ for the diploma. The diploma is made up of eight courses, which can be undertaken across the duration of their bachelors program or full time upon the completion of their program.
The value of studying a foreign language is widely acknowledged and students may have a strong interest in pursuing language studies for personal or career related reasons including enhancing employment prospects or facilitating overseas study options. To enrol in the Diploma in Languages, students must meet the entry requirements that apply to the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in the year they wish to commence the diploma.
The Diploma in Music is available for students with a desire to continue formal studies in music beyond secondary school. There are two streams available in this Diploma: Music Studies & Ensemble and Popular Music & Music Technology. As with languages, students must meet BA entry requirements. Admission to the Music Studies & Ensemble stream also requires an audition or interview.
The Diploma in Global Issues will be attractive to students who have an interest in careers that require knowledge of globalisation in all of its forms, including global perspectives on the environment as well as economic, political and social change. At least four units of this diploma will be taken in a member university of Universitas 21, either online or on campus. Students interested in the Diploma in Global Issues need to complete one year (16 units) of undergraduate study before applying.
UQ Enhanced Studies Program
The University of Queensland’s Enhanced Studies Program (ESP) provides high achieving Year 12 students with an opportunity to extend their studies in an area of interest and ‘test drive’ university life.
Students accepted into the program can study one university course (subject) during Semester One of Year 12. An ESP information pack containing important program information and guidelines, a course list and student application form was sent to all Queensland secondary schools early in Term 3. If you require additional copies please contact UQ Student Recruitment or visit the ESP website.
For the 2010 program, students are able to select from a broad range of courses across a number of areas of study. All successful ESP students will be eligible to receive one bonus point towards their university entry rank through the UQ Bonus Rank Scheme and the majority of ESP students who later enrol in a relevant UQ program may also be eligible to receive credit for their completed course.
Prior to nomination, students, school contacts and parents must ensure they are familiar with the 2010 ESP Guidelines available online via the ESP website. Interested students should be aware that Semester One, 2010 timetable information will not be available until late January. While efforts are made to ensure courses nominated for study through ESP have classes scheduled outside of regular school hours, this is not always possible and classes may fall within the hours of 9am-3pm. Students should research their course of interest thoroughly prior to applying and take note of course requirements, in particular expected contact hours as well as learning and assessment requirements. The Courses and Programs website will allow students to independently search for this information based on current and prior semester course profiles, however, note that variations will occur between semesters.
ESP applications for 2010 must be received by UQ Student Recruitment by Friday, 23 October 2009. Students and schools will be notified of the outcome of applications before the end of the school year.
Young Scholars Program update
Congratulations to all students who have been selected to participate in the Young Scholars Program in 2010. We received an overwhelming response from interested students. All successful candidates have been notified and will attend a welcome event on Sunday, 29 November ahead of a four day residential camp running until 3 December.
The applicants came from a great mixture of public and private schools from all across Queensland and it is this diversity that we believe will make the Young Scholars Program a truly rewarding experience for all involved. Students will be notified of further details regarding the residential camp later this month.
Coral Reefs and Climate Change publication and CD
Queensland schools will have an opportunity to get their hands on an interactive and educational new publication which looks at the effects of climate change on our coral reefs.
Coral Reefs and Climate Change: the Guide for Education and Awareness is a unique collaboration between educators and researchers that explains the science, issues and remedies to a global problem and provides tools for understanding the complex dynamics that shape our living reefs.
The package includes a Reef Activities CD, comprised of a broad set of field activities and guided research projects targeted to anyone interested in taking a closer look at coral reefs.
It also comes with a Coral Health Chart, a flexible tool allowing users to contribute to a global coral reef database by monitoring coral health in the field or classroom.
Available in October, schools can register an expression of interest in Coral Reefs and Climate Change by filling out a simple form in the attachment below.
