Congratulations! You are about to join the ranks of more than 160,000 UQ graduates including many of Australia's scholarly, professional, scientific and cultural leaders, including a Nobel Laureate, Governor-General, state governors, Chief Justices of both Australia and Queensland and an Oscar winner.
Your graduation ceremony is a pageant celebrating your transition from student to graduate and marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in your life.
Graduand Registration
On the day of your graduation you will be required to register up to ninety minutes before your ceremony commences.
- Graduands attending St Lucia ceremonies must register in the Lecture Theatre of the UQ Centre ninety minutes before the scheduled commencement of their ceremony
- Graduands attending Ipswich ceremonies must register in the Cunningham Room of the Ipswich Civic Hall one hour before the scheduled commencement of their ceremony
Graduands must report back to the appropriate registration area no later than forty minutes before the commencement of their ceremony.
Academic Dress
Unless you have made other arrangements with the Academic Dress Hire Service, you must collect your academic dress on the day of your ceremony.
Arrangements for the collection of academic dress for the July 2008 graduation ceremonies will be as follows:
- St Lucia ceremonies
From rooms E219 (All Masters and Doctoral programs) and E218 (all other programs) of the Forgan Smith Building. Graduands attending ceremonies commencing at 11.00am or 2.00pm may collect their academic dress from 8.30am onwards. Graduands attending ceremonies commencing at 6.00pm should collect their academic dress after 2.30pm.
- Ipswich ceremonies
From the Cunningham Room on the lower ground floor of the Ipswich Civic Hall after 3.30pm on Monday 17 July.
If you are unable to collect your academic dress yourself, please arrange for someone else to collect it on your behalf.
Academic dress should be collected before registering for the ceremony.
Academic dress must be returned to the designated return point (as advised by Academic Dress Hire Service staff at the time of collection) as soon as possible after your ceremony concludes.
Seating Arrangements
Graduands have allocated seats to ensure they process onto stage in the correct order. Guest seating is not reserved and is allocated on a "first come, first seated" basis. If you or your guests require special seating arrangements, please contact Graduations. Please note that the University cannot supply you or your guests with wheelchairs.
Please ensure your guests are seated 30 minutes before the ceremony commences.
Children and strollers/prams
Graduation is a family event and children are welcome, however please bear in mind that ceremonies can last for 90 minutes and may be boring for younger children. Infants who do not require their own seat do not require a ticket. For safety reasons, strollers and parms are not permitted inside the hall but they may be left in the foyer.
What to wear
Smart casual attire is the minimum dress standard for graduands and their guests: for example, shorts, t-shirts, thongs, joggers and other casual clothing or footwear are not considered appropriate. Graduands may wish to take into account that academic gowns are predominantly black, are worn open at the front and also expose the lower arms.
Graduands are welcome to wear traditional costumes to their ceremony.

Food and Beverage
Graduates and their guests are invited to light refreshments at the conclusion of the ceremony. There are also a number of food outlets on the Gatton and St Lucia campuses.
