A flexible approach
Research higher degree programs at UQ provide the flexibility to conduct your research, write and submit your thesis in a timeframe sympathetic to your individual circumstances.
There are two research higher degrees:
- The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a three-to-four year program.
- The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a one-to-two year program.
How much will my research degree cost?
Domestic candidates do not pay tuition fees during their research higher degree studies. UQ covers the cost of the research training place for Australian or Permanent Resident research students who do not qualify for a Federal Government place.
International research higher degree students are liable for tuition fees for each semester for which they are enrolled.
Tuition fees must be paid for each semester of enrolment. There are two semesters per calendar year.
The cut-off dates for enrolment in each semester (known as Census dates) are:
- Semester 1 - March 31
- Semester 2 - August 31
When should I start?
Commence at a time that will give you the most benefit from your semester fees. To obtain maximum benefit, international candidates should commence:
- between 1 December and 31 March to start in Semester 1
- between 1 June and 31 August to start in Semester 2
How do I calculate my fees?
Visit the UQ annual fee schedule for research higher degrees to see the fees that apply to your area of research.
Where is UQ's policy on fees?
UQ's myAdvisor website provides a comprehensive list of University Rules, including tuition fees.
UQ's Financial Management Practices Manual states:
"International Students.
In accordance with a decision of the Australian Government, all international students commencing a program are required to meet the full cost of their program. Details of individual program fees are supplied in the current University of Queensland Fee Rules. Each student shall pay the fee set against the relevant description of enrolment unless otherwise indicated. The fees shown in Part B, Schedule 2 of the Fee Rules must be paid for each semester of enrolment. If a question arises as to the categorisation of a person's studies, the President of the Academic Board shall determine the category."
