National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Scholarships


Purpose: To support outstanding Australian health and medical graduates early in their career so that they can be trained to conduct research that is internationally competitive and develop a capacity for original independent research.

Closing Date: 1 July 2009 for scholarships commencing in 2010. This is the internal closing date at The University of Queensland, and is the date by which applicants must lodge their application with the Research Higher Degrees Unit for review. The Research Higher Degrees Unit lodges all applications with the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) by the NHMRC closing date of 31 July 2009.

Basis of Award: Academic merit; research experience and/or potential; other criteria as set by the NHMRC.

Scholarship Rules: This scholarship confirms to the UQ Research Scholarship General Conditions except as follows.

  • Scholarship Structure: Periods of enrolment in your research higher degree program before commencing your scholarship and while on leave without stipend from your scholarship are deducted from the duration of the scholarship.
  • Establishment Grant: NHMRC scholarship holders are not eligible to receive the Establishment Grant.
  • Part-Time Scholarships: NHMRC scholarship holders must be approved by the NHMRC to enrol part-time, and can do so for a maximum of 12 months.
  • Scholarship Leave: NHMRC scholarship holders must be approved by the NHMRC to take parental leave or the additional 12 weeks (60 days) of paid sick leave within the duration of the scholarship.
  • Scholarship Leave: NHMRC scholarship holders must be approved by the NHMRC to take leave without pay.
  • Employment and Other Funding: NHMRC scholarship holders may not receive funds from other awards, scholarships or living allowances in excess of 75% of their NHMRC scholarship stipend rate.
  • Transfer and Termination of Scholarships: NHMRC scholarships may be transferred between institutions when there are exceptional circumstances and all parties support the transer. The transfer must be approved in advance by the NHMRC.
