NHMRC scholarships support outstanding Australian health and medical graduates early in their career so that they can be trained to conduct research that is internationally competitive and develop a capacity for original independent research. 

To be eligible, you must:

Value: The scholarships provide stipends, leave entitlements and other allowances for consumables, relocation, and establishment. Full time postgraduate scholars undertaking their PhD are awarded a maximum of three years and those undertaking MPhil are awarded a maximum of two years. Part-time scholarships are only available to medical and dental postgraduate research scholarship holders who are undertaking dual training – postgraduate medical/dental and a PhD. The maximum period for which a part-time scholarship can be held is six years. Extensions to scholarships may be approved by NHMRC under limited exceptional circumstances.

Closing Dates:  The NHMRC closing date is on 1 August 2011 at 5pm. The closing date to lodge an application with the Graduate School is 18 July 2011 to allow for sufficient processing time prior to the NHMRC closing date.

Scholarship Rules: UQ Research Scholarship General Conditions except as follows:

  • Establishment Grant: NHMRC scholarship holders are not eligible to receive the Establishment Grant.
  • Part-Time Scholarships: NHMRC scholarship holders must be approved by the NHMRC to enrol part-time, and can do so for a maximum of 12 months.
  • Scholarship Leave: NHMRC scholarship holders must be approved by the NHMRC to take parental leave or the additional 12 weeks (60 days) of paid sick leave within the duration of the scholarship.  NHMRC scholarship holders must be approved by the NHMRC to take leave without pay.
  • Employment and Other Funding: NHMRC scholarship holders may not receive funds from other awards, scholarships or living allowances in excess of 75% of their NHMRC scholarship stipend rate.
  • Transfer and Termination of Scholarships: NHMRC scholarships may be transferred between institutions when there are exceptional circumstances and all parties support the transfer. The transfer must be approved in advance by the NHMRC.
