| Mombukagakusho Scholarships |
The Research category of the Mombukagakusho Scholarships is now open, and are offered to Australian citizens who wish to study at Japanese universities. The Research category is offered for two years, which includes a six month prepatory study of the Japanese language. Successful applicants will begin the scholarship in April 2013. Benefits include return airfares to Japan and an allowance (as a guide, 143,000 yen or AU$1690 was paid per month in 2012). | Kym Broadhurst Bursary for the Visually Impaired |
To assist undergraduate or postgraduate students with visual impairments whose corrected vision is less than 6:60. Preference will be given to a student who is totally blind. Applicants must have maintained an enrolment of at least four units each semester. Postgraduate Research Students may also apply.
Value: $1095 for 2012, tenable for the duration of the program and subject to satisfactory academic progress.

2012 NCEDA PhD Supplementary Scholarship
|
The National Centre of Excellence in Desalination Australia (NCEDA) leads and coordinates Australia’s research in desalination technology.
The NCEDA PhD supplementary scholarship will be offered to highly ranked PhD students that are enrolled full-time, and hold either an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or other recognised Commonwealth scholarship for full-time research leading to the award of a PhD.
The maximum value of the NCEDA PhD Supplementary Scholarship will be $30,000 over three years, with a maximum payable amount of $10,000 per annum. Applications are invited from PhD candidates in any field of study whose area of research contributes to the field of desalination and aligns with NCEDA’s Research Roadmap. |

| EMBL PhD Symposium Travel Grant Program |
The EMBL PhD Symposium Travel Grant provides funding of $3000 for students to attend the 14th International EMBL PhD Symposium, which will be held from 25-27 October 2012 at EMBL’s Advanced Training Centre in Heidelberg, Germany.
The theme of the conference this year is Overcoming Chaos: Networks in Life Sciences. It is open to students in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, informatics, engineering and molecular medicine who are currently enrolled in a PhD program at an Australian University, and have not yet submitted a thesis.

| The Prime Minister's Australia Asia Awards |
The Prime Minister's Australia Asia Awards are a unique opportunity for students to undertake international study and research related to their Australian degree, and gain international work experience, in Asia.
The awards are open to Australian undergraduate and postgraduate students in any field of study. For postgraduate students, the Award provides up to $63,500 towards travel and establishment allowances, tuition and internship contributions, and travel insurance.
Applications are submited online through the Endeavour Online IT system, and then sent to your home institution for selection and nomination. | Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Research Scholarship |
The Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Foundation wishes to stimulate research in the allied health sciences and is offering scholarships in theis field.
Renumeration will be $27,500 per annum (tax-free).
The scholarship is open to full time PhD students who are likely to complete their studies during the two year tenure of the scholarship. Successful applicants will be expected to take up the scholarship in 2013.

2013 Fulbright Scholarships
|
Applications for the prestigious Fulbright Scholarships open on 1 June 2012, and offer the opportunity to undergo study and research in the United States.
Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarships: Valued up to US$40,000 for study or research (8-12 months) towards an Australian PhD, or enrolment in a US higher degree.
Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarship: Valued up to US$40,000, and supports a 3-12 month research program for scholars who have recently completed a PhD and would like to pursue ongoing postdoctoral research.
Fulbright Indigenous Scholarship: Open to Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders in any field of study.

| EMBL Australia Travel Grant Program |
The EMBL Australia Travel Grant provides funding of $3500 for short term (up to 6 weeks) or $7500 for long term (up to 6 months) visits to attend conferences or a short course, or undertake training at one of the EMBL laboratories at EMBL’s headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany or one of the four outstations at Hamburg in Germany, Hinxton, Cambridge in the UK, Grenoble in France or Monterotondo, Rome in Italy.
It is open to students in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, informatics, engineering and molecular medicine who are currently enrolled in a PhD program at an Australian University, and have not yet submitted a thesis.

The Dennis Weatherstone Predoctoral Fellowship Program
|
Autism Speaks supports global biomedical research into the diagnosis, causes, prevention, and treatment of autism.
Autism Speaks invites applications from predoctoral students interested in pursuing careers in autism research. The Dennis Weatherstone Fellows will work directly with mentors who are leading scientists in autism research. This program supports the growth of a promising cadre of young scientists who will make autism research their chosen field.

The DAAD is Germany's largest scholarship-awarding organisation and runs several programs for academic exchange between Germany and Australia. International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)
International Postgraduate Research Scholarships are awarded to outstanding international research higher degree students to cover tuition fees and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
To be eligible, you must:
- be an international applicant
- be nominated by your enrolling School/Institute. Candidates can only be nominated twice. The second nomination must be made within 12 months of the first nomination and before the candidate has commenced their program
- meet international student visa requirements as specified by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC)
- be commencing full-time enrolment in an RHD program for the first time in Australia in one of UQ's areas of research strength
- be in receipt of an unconditional offer of admission
- not hold a qualification equivalent to or at a higher level than the research higher degree program you are undertaking
- not have held an Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) scholarship within the two years prior to commencing the IPRS
- not be receiving a scholarship for which course tuition is a component under any other scholarship scheme to which the Australian Government makes a substantial contribution

UQ Centennial Scholarship (UQCent)
UQ Centennial Scholarships are provided to outstanding international RHD students to cover living expenses.
Value: AUD$23,728 per annum (2012 rate). This rate is indexed annually.
To be eligible, you must:
- be an international applicant
- have been awarded an IPRS or other external tuition scholarship
- not already hold an externally funded living allowance scholarship of equal or greater value
- be nominated by your enrolling School/Institute

UQ International Scholarships are awarded to outstanding international research higher degree students to cover the cost of living expenses and/or tuition fees.
Value: Living Allowance component is AUD$23,728 (2012 rate). This rate is indexed annually.
To be eligible, you must:
- be an international applicant
- undertake a research project in an area of research strength at UQ
- be in receipt of an unconditional offer of admission
- be nominated by your enrolling School/Institute. Candidates can only be nominated twice. The second nomination must be made within 12 months of the first nomination and before the candidate has commenced the program. A candidate can be nominated again on confirmation of candidature but only if he/she has been nominated no more than once before.

UQ Advantage RHD Scholarship
UQ Advantage RHD Scholarships are awarded to outstanding research higher degree students and cover a living stipend top-up.
Value: AUD$5000 per annum
To be eligible, you must:
- be in receipt of an IPRS/UQCent (international applicants), APA or UQRS (domestic applicants).
- be commencing your program for the first time at UQ.
- be nominated by your enrolling School/Institute.
- undertake a research project in an area of research strength at The University of Queensland.
- not hold an Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) scholarship.

Graduate School International Travel Award (GSITA)
Graduate School International Travel Awards are awarded to support overseas travel for at least one distinct study related purpose that is relevant and academically justifiable but not essential to the completion of your thesis. Acceptable travel purposes include accessing research material or facilities that are unavailable in Australia (e.g. libraries, archives, laboratories) and working in a research environment with resources not currently available to the candidate. This award does not support travel to attend overseas conferences, complete courses and visiting an advisory team.
Value: AUD$3000 for travel in the Pacific region (eg. Indonesia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea) and AUD$5000 for travel elsewhere in the world.
To be eligible, you must:
- Be a confirmed RHD candidate enrolled full-time at UQ (part-time students are eligible to apply but must be enrolled full time while overseas)
- Be a confirmed candidate with no overdue milestone at the time of application
- Travel before the Thesis Review milestone
- Not have previously held a UQ Graduate School funded travel grant
- Demonstrate that additional funds are available if required
- Undertake at least 10 days of research related activity
- Plan your departure date to be after the outcome of the travel award application is announced as retrospective funding will not be approved.
How to Apply: Submit a complete GSITA application form and GSITA budget spreadsheet by the close of the scholarship round.
Closing dates: 24 February 2012, 18 May 2012, 17 August 2012, 16 November 2012.
Rules:
- Travel must be completed before the 'Thesis Review' milestone
- Travel must take place within six months of the date of the award
- Any changes to the destination, purpose or dates of travel requires approval from the Graduate School
- Candidates must submit a Report on Research Travel form upon their return.
English Language Scholarship (ELS)
UQ offers an English Language Scholarship (ELS) program to prospective international students who are applying to study for a research higher degree at UQ. This program assists PhD and MPhil candidates who require additional English language training to meet the English Language proficiency standard required for entry.
The ELS includes:
- the cost of 10 weeks’ tuition fees for the English Language program at UQ’s Institute of Continuing & TESOL Education (ICTE-UQ)
- 10 weeks of Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) medical insurance for the candidate (single rate)
- a living stipend for the duration of the 10 week English language program, which is paid within 2 weeks of arrival or class commencement, whichever is the later date.
- the fee for one compulsory International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test at the end of the program (ONLY for candidates in the English for Academic Purposes II program).
To be eligible, you must:
- receive a Package Offer of a place in a UQ research higher degree program
- meet relevant English Language Proficiency entry scores
- be able to demonstrate payment of full tuition fees for the research higher degree program, either in the form of a fully-funded scholarship or other private sources.
This scholarship is not available to students who have been awarded a UQ tuition scholarship.

CSC-UQ PhD Scholarship
The University of Queensland prides itself on a culture of research excellence and is consistently ranked in the top one percent of universities in the world. Research higher degree students at UQ have access to many of the world’s leading academics, first-class facilities, and a vibrant campus life.
From 2012, UQ will also offer the Australia-first ‘Career Advantage PhD Program’ that accelerates career development and enhances a participant’s employability through advanced, professionally focused training.
The China Scholarship Council and UQ have established a collaborative arrangement to provide support and research training for students from a wide range of universities in China through the ‘CSC-UQ PhD Scholarship’.
What is the China Scholarship Council?
The China Scholarship Council is a non-profit institution affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education. The CSC is responsible for the organisation, management and provision of financial resources for Chinese citizens studying abroad, and to international students studying in China.
What funding is included in the CSC-UQ PhD Scholarship?
CSC Scholarship funding covers living allowance, health insurance in Australia, one return airfare from China to Australia, and your Australian Student Visa application fees. Successful applicants who are offered a place in the University’s PHD program and supported by their School will also receive a UQ International (UQI) Scholarship that covers your PhD tuition fees for 3.5 years.
Who is eligible for the CSC-UQ PhD Scholarship?
To apply for this scholarship, you must satisfy the following criteria:
- You must be a citizen and permanent resident of the People’s Republic of China;
- You must be eligible to receive an Australian Student Visa;
- You must satisfy the selection criteria set by the CSC;
- You must satisfy UQ’s admissions entry requirement and be offered a place in the PhD program.
-You must have met the University’s English proficiency requirement.

Before you can apply for the CSC-UQ PhD Scholarship, you must first be offered a place in the University of Queensland’s PhD program.
Students wishing to apply for admission to UQ should follow the step-by-step process located here.
When you are invited by the potential school to submit an application, you should clearly note that you are applying for a 2012 CSC-UQ Scholarship when submitting the admission application to the University of Queensland.
It is essential that you check with your proposed School or Institute that you wish to enroll in for the closing date for accepting applications for the CSC-UQ scholarship. Late applications may not be accepted.

Please do not submit your CSC-UQ PhD Scholarship application to the University of Queensland, it can only be accepted and processed by the CSC.
