Graduate Student Week: Program for 21-28 September 2009


Graduate Student Week (GSW) is a program of research training workshops and seminars organised by the UQ Graduate School. Research Higher Degree candidates (PhD & MPhil), postgraduate coursework  and Honours students are all encouraged to participate in Graduate Student Week. All workshops are restricted to currently enrolled UQ students and staff, and some are available only to research higher degree candidates. If you have an interest in research, you will find this a rewarding week of activities.

What types of workshops?

Workshops are colour coded according to the type of skills training and clustered together (where possible) for your convenience.

Eight finalists will present their "Three Minute Thesis" as a compelling three minute oration on their thesis topic and its significance in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience. They will be competing for a $5000 prize to attend an international research conference.

Join our judges, Warwick Hadfield (ABC Sports broadcaster), Prof. Michael Bromley,  and A/Prof. Melissa Brown and cast your own vote on whose Three Minute Thesis reigns supreme in 2009. All welcome!

New Technologies: Enriching the Research Process

Keith Webster will demonstrate a number of different Web 2.0 and other technologies which will help graduate students more effectively to discover, gather, create and share information. These will include social networking technologies such as Twitter and Facebook, collaborative tools such as Delicious, RSS aggregators and add-ons to Firefox.

This session will be of interest to those keen to learn more about new technologies, and also to those willing to share their own tips and tricks.
