Graduate School Research Travel Grant (GSRTG)


Purpose: To enable confirmed research higher degree candidates to undertake non-essential research travel that will enhance the quality and accelerate the progress of their research by giving them access to equipment, expertise, or archives not readily available at the University of Queensland.

Value: As determined by the Dean, UQ Graduate School, to a maximum of

  • $2000 for travel in Australia or to New Zealand
  • $3000 for travel to Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Oceania, or South-East Asia
  • $5000 for travel to other countries or regions

Closing Date: None. All confirmed candidates who lodge a GSRTG Application are considered for this grant.

Source of Funding: The University of Queensland.

Basis of Award: Performance during candidature to date; preparedness to undertake travel; extent to which the proposed travel will enhance the quality of the thesis and the timeliness of submission. Preference is given to candidates whose need for travel was unforeseen at confirmation of candidature.

Eligibility: To receive this grant, you must

  • be a confirmed candidate.
  • propose to undertake research travel that is not essential to your research project (essential research travel and conference travel must be agreed to and funded by your enrolling academic unit).
  • not have previously received a GSRTG.
  • lodge your complete and fully endorsed GSRTG application with the Research Higher Degrees Unit at least 1 month before commencing the research travel for which the grant is sought.

Grant Rules: 

  1. Recipients must use the application form and budget spreadsheet provided by the University.
  2. Recipients must use the grant for the research travel outlined in the application and approved by the Dean, UQ Graduate School.
  3. Recipients must undertake the research travel approved by the Dean, UQ Graduate School, within 6 months of receiving the offer of the grant.
  4. Recipients must seek the approval of the Dean, UQ Graduate School, to vary the approved research travel. If approved, the value of the grant may be adjusted to reflect the variation.
  5. Prior to undertaking the approved research travel, recipients must
    1. enrol on a full-time basis for the duration of the research travel, and
    2. if an international student in Australia on a student visa, advise the Visa Officer in UQ International if they will be more than 250 kms from The University of Queensland during the duration of the research travel. The Visa Officer will then inform the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) of the approved period of absence from The University.
  6. Recipients must complete a report on their research travel using the form provided by the University within 4 weeks of the end of the funded research travel.
  7. Recipients must repay to The University
    1. any unused funds, and
    2. any funds that The University deems were not used for the research travel approved by the Dean, UQ Graduate School.
  8. Recipients must include an explicit statement in any publication that arises as a result of the research conducted while in receipt of the grant that the research was undertaken as a holder of a University of Queensland Graduate School Research Travel Grant.
