Financial support for living costs and travel enables research students to focus on their research. UQ offers a variety of living allowance, travel and top-up scholarships for domestic research students.
 
In 2012, the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), UQ Research Scholarship (UQRS), UQ Advantage scholarships and the Graduate School International Travel Awards (GSITA) will be awarded in four rounds.
 
Students can apply at anytime for admission to research higher degree programs. However, students who wish to be considered for a UQ Graduate School scholarship should note that the Graduate School Scholarship Selection Committee meets four times a year to select the recipients. In order to have your scholarship application considered for recommendation by the School/Institute, we advise that you submit your application for admission and scholarship form as early as possible.
 
The following are recommended dates for your applications to be submitted to your enrolling School/Institute. Your proposed School/Institute may have internal deadlines for accepting applications in each scholarship round, and it is essential that you follow the school/institute deadline if they are different from the recommended date below:

Mombukagakusho Scholarships

The Research category of the Mombukagakusho Scholarships is now open, and are offered to Australian citizens who wish to study at Japanese universities.

The Research category is offered for two years, which includes a six month prepatory study of the Japanese language. Successful applicants will begin the scholarship in April 2013. Benefits include return airfares to Japan and an allowance (as a guide, 143,000 yen or AU$1690 was paid per month in 2012).

Kym Broadhurst Bursary for the Visually Impaired
To assist undergraduate or postgraduate students with visual impairments whose corrected vision is less than 6:60. Preference will be given to a student who is totally blind. Applicants must have maintained an enrolment of at least four units each semester. Postgraduate Research Students may also apply.
 
Value: $1095 for 2012, tenable for the duration of the program and subject to satisfactory academic progress.

2012 NCEDA PhD Supplementary Scholarship 
The National Centre of Excellence in Desalination Australia (NCEDA) leads and coordinates Australia’s research in desalination technology. 
 
The NCEDA PhD supplementary scholarship will be offered to highly ranked PhD students that are enrolled full-time, and hold either an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or other recognised Commonwealth scholarship for full-time research leading to the award of a PhD.

The maximum value of the NCEDA PhD Supplementary Scholarship will be $30,000 over three years, with a maximum payable amount of $10,000 per annum. Applications are invited from PhD candidates in any field of study whose area of research contributes to the field of desalination and aligns with NCEDA’s Research Roadmap.

EMBL PhD Symposium Travel Grant Program
The EMBL PhD Symposium Travel Grant provides funding of $3000 for students to attend the 14th International EMBL PhD Symposium, which will be held from 25-27 October 2012 at EMBL’s Advanced Training Centre in Heidelberg, Germany.

The theme of the conference this year is Overcoming Chaos: Networks in Life Sciences.

It is open to students in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, informatics, engineering and molecular medicine who are currently enrolled in a PhD program at an Australian University, and have not yet submitted a thesis.

The Prime Minister's Australia Asia Awards
The Prime Minister's Australia Asia Awards are a unique opportunity for students to undertake international study and research related to their Australian degree, and gain international work experience, in Asia.
 
The awards are open to Australian undergraduate and postgraduate students in any field of study. For postgraduate students, the Award provides up to $63,500 towards travel and establishment allowances, tuition and internship contributions, and travel insurance.
 
Applications are submited online through the Endeavour Online IT system, and then sent to your home institution for selection and nomination. Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Research Scholarship
The Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Foundation wishes to stimulate research in the allied health sciences and is offering scholarships in theis field.
 
Renumeration will be $27,500 per annum (tax-free).
 
The scholarship is open to full time PhD students who are likely to complete their studies during the two year tenure of the scholarship. Successful applicants will be expected to take up the scholarship in 2013.

2013 Fulbright Scholarships
Applications for the prestigious Fulbright Scholarships open on 1 June 2012, and offer the opportunity to undergo study and research in the United States.
 
Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarships: Valued up to US$40,000 for study or research (8-12 months) towards an Australian PhD, or enrolment in a US higher degree.
 
Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarship: Valued up to US$40,000, and supports a 3-12 month research program for scholars who have recently completed a PhD and would like to pursue ongoing postdoctoral research.
 
Fulbright Indigenous Scholarship: Open to Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders in any field of study.

EMBL Australia Travel Grant Program
The EMBL Australia Travel Grant provides funding of $3500 for short term (up to 6 weeks) or $7500 for long term (up to 6 months) visits to attend conferences or a short course, or undertake training at one of the EMBL laboratories at EMBL’s headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany or one of the four outstations at Hamburg in Germany, Hinxton, Cambridge in the UK, Grenoble in France or Monterotondo, Rome in Italy.
 
It is open to students in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, informatics, engineering and molecular medicine who are currently enrolled in a PhD program at an Australian University, and have not yet submitted a thesis.

The Dennis Weatherstone Predoctoral Fellowship Program
Autism Speaks supports global biomedical research into the diagnosis, causes, prevention, and treatment of autism. 
 
Autism Speaks invites applications from predoctoral students interested in pursuing careers in autism research. The Dennis Weatherstone Fellows will work directly with mentors who are leading scientists in autism research. This program supports the growth of a promising cadre of young scientists who will make autism research their chosen field.

DAAD scholarships in Germany
The DAAD is Germany's largest scholarship-awarding organisation and runs several programs for academic exchange between Germany and Australia. These programs range from short-term exchanges for research or teaching purposes through to doctoral scholarships lasting several years. The scholarships offered by the DAAD are awarded to younger university graduates from all academic disciplines as well as from the fields of music and art.  
 
 
Heart Foundation
The Heart Foundation offers a range of awards across a variety of categories for research into heart, stroke and blood vessel disease. Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)

The APA scholarship provides a living allowance for high-quality research higher degree students.  This scholarship is awarded on academic merit, research experience and/or potential; and alignment with UQ research strengths.

Value: AUD$23,728 per annum (2012 rate).  This rate is indexed annually.

To be eligible, you must:

  • be a domestic applicant or an international student who holds an IPRS commencing from 1 January 2011 
  • be nominated by your enrolling School/Institute. Candidates can only be nominated twice. The second nomination must be made within 12 months of the first nomination.  The nomination must be before the candidate commences their program or in the first round after they have commenced.  In instances where the candidate is awarded a scholarship after commencement, there will be no retrospective payments of this scholarship. 
  • have an academic qualification equivalent to a Bachelor's degree with Honours Class I.
  • not already have an academic qualification equivalent to or at a higher level than the research higher degree program you are undertaking.
  • not have previously held a research higher degree scholarship funded by the Australian Federal government (other than IPRS) for six months or more
  • not be receiving an equivalent award, scholarship (excluding IPRS) or salary providing a benefit greater than 75% of the APA stipend rate to undertake the RHD program.

UQ Research Scholarship (UQRS)

UQRS scholarships are awarded to exceptional research higher degree students that are undertaking a research project in one of UQ's research strengths

Value: AUD$23,728 per annum (2012 rate).  This rate is indexed annually.

  • be a domestic applicant
  • be nominated by your enrolling School/Institute.   • not already hold an externally funded living allowance scholarship of equal or greater value

UQ Advantage RHD Scholarship

UQ Advantage RHD Scholarships are awarded to outstanding research higher degree students and cover a living stipend top-up. 

Value: AUD$5000 per annum

To be eligible, you must:

  • be in receipt of an IPRS/UQCent (international applicants), APA or UQRS (domestic applicants).
  • be commencing your program for the first time at UQ.
  • be nominated by your enrolling School/Institute.
  • undertake a research project in an area of research strength at The University of Queensland.
  • not hold an Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) scholarship.

Graduate School International Travel Award (GSITA)

Graduate School International Travel Awards are awarded to support overseas travel for at least one distinct study related purpose that is relevant and academically justifiable but not essential to the completion of your thesis.  Acceptable travel purposes include accessing research material or facilities that are unavailable in Australia (e.g. libraries, archives, laboratories) and working in a research environment with resources not currently available to the candidate.  This award does not support travel to attend overseas conferences, complete courses and visiting an advisory team.

Value: AUD$3000 for travel in the Pacific region (eg. Indonesia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea) and AUD$5000 for travel elsewhere in the world.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a confirmed RHD candidate enrolled full-time at UQ (part-time students are eligible to apply but must be enrolled full time while overseas)
  • Be a confirmed candidate with no overdue milestone at the time of application
  • Travel before the Thesis Review milestone 
  • Not have previously held a UQ Graduate School funded travel grant
  • Demonstrate that additional funds are available if required
  • Undertake at least 10 days of research related activity
  • Plan your departure date to be after the outcome of the travel award application is announced as retrospective funding will not be approved.

How to Apply: Submit a complete GSITA application form and GSITA budget spreadsheet by the close of the scholarship round. 

Closing dates:  24 February 2012, 18 May 2012, 17 August 2012, 16 November 2012.

Rules:

  • Travel must be completed before the 'Thesis Review' milestone
  • Travel must take place within six months of the date of the award
  • Any changes to the destination, purpose or dates of travel requires approval from the Graduate School
  • Candidates must submit a Report on Research Travel form upon their return.

National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC)

NHMRC scholarships support outstanding Australian health and medical graduates early in their career so that they can be trained to conduct research that is internationally competitive and develop a capacity for original independent research. 

To be eligible, you must:

Value: The scholarships provide stipends, leave entitlements and other allowances for consumables, relocation, and establishment. Full time postgraduate scholars undertaking their PhD are awarded a maximum of three years and those undertaking MPhil are awarded a maximum of two years. Part-time scholarships are only available to medical and dental postgraduate research scholarship holders who are undertaking dual training – postgraduate medical/dental and a PhD. The maximum period for which a part-time scholarship can be held is six years. Extensions to scholarships may be approved by NHMRC under limited exceptional circumstances.

Closing Date: UQ's internal closing date is 5pm on 29 June 2012. The Graduate School checks the applications on the NHMRC Research Grants Management System (RGMS) before endorsement.

Research Commercialisation Training Scheme (CTS)

The Research Commercialisation Training Scheme (CTS) supports domestic RHD students undertaking research commercialisation and innovation training.  The CTS covers the full cost of tuition fees for an approved Graduate Certificate program in Research Commercialisation. In addition, the CTS provides a grant of $750 per unit of study (to a maximum of $6000) to assist recipients in meeting the direct costs of undertaking the approved commercialisation training. CTS places are funded by the Federal government and awarded on the basis of performance during candidature to date and the suitability of your research project for commercialisation.

Eligibility: To receive this scholarship, you must

  • be a domestic candidate.
  • agree to enrol in an approved Graduate Certificate program on a part-time basis while concurrently enrolled in a PhD or MPhil program.  Commencement in the program must take place prior to the submission of your thesis and full-time enrollment is permitted in these cases.  Students who continue in the program following thesis submission must complete the coursework within 6 months of the date of submission.
  • not previously have completed a Graduate Certificate program in research commercialisation training.

CTS Rules:

  • Recipients must use the application form provided by the University.
  • Recipients must use the CTS for the research commercialisation training outlined in the application and approved by the Dean, UQ Graduate School.
  • Recipients must commence the CTS training in the semester specified in the CTS offer.
  • Recipients must seek the approval of the Dean, UQ Graduate School, to vary the approved research commercialisation training. If approved, the value of the grant may be adjusted to reflect the variation.
  • Recipients cease to be entitled to CTS tuition fee support when one of the following applies:
    • 24 months after commencing the CTS training; or
    • 6 months after submitting the RHD thesis for examination; or
    • after 31 December 2012.
  • Recipients must repay to UQ:
    • the part of the grant that is equal to the number of units not enrolled in if the Graduate Certificate is not completed by the approved date, and
    • any funds that The University deems were not used for the commercialisation training approved by the Dean, UQ Graduate School.

Establishment Grant

The Establishment Grant helps newly enrolled students with costs such as, but not limited to, relocation expenses or computer equipment.
 
Only students that are awarded an APA or UQRS, who did not enrol before or are newly enrolled since the last scholarship round, are entitled to an Establishment Grant. IPRS and UQI recipients are not eligible for this grant.
 
Students transferring to the University of Queensland after starting their research higher degree at another institution qualify for the Grant as long as they meet the above criteria.
 
Eligible RHD students receive the Establishment Grant in their first or second scholarship payment. The value of the grant is $2500.
 
Grant recipients who relinquish the scholarship within three months of receiving the grant may be required to repay monies received to the University.
