An applicant who is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or New Zealand citizen is considered a domestic applicant and should follow the procedure outlined below. Any other applicant is considered an international applicant.
To apply for admission to the PhD or MPhil program, you must complete:
- Application for Admission and Scholarship, and
- any other necessary forms and documents, including
- complete certified academic transcripts and official certification of degrees and diplomas awarded (unless qualifications are from the University of Queensland);
- a curriculum vitae that includes details of publications or other research or relevant work experience;
- evidence of English proficiency, if required;
- certified documentary evidence of the duration and attendance status of any previous research higher degree enrolment. Where the previous research higher degree enrolment was undertaken in Australia, students must also provide evidence of consumed research higher degree student load, measured in Equivalent Full-time Student Load (EFTSL).
You should send the completed Application and other documents to the administrative office of the school through which you intend to study and conduct your research. Your school will consider your application, complete the School Recommendation on an Application for Admission and Scholarship, attach it to your application and send it to the Research Higher Degrees (RHD) Unit
The RHD Unit enters your application details on SI-net, assesses your application and the school's recommendation to make sure that everything complies with University policy and procedure, and prepares a recommendation for consideration by the Dean, UQ Graduate School. Thus, the Dean makes the formal decision to admit you as a research higher degree candidate based on your application, the school's recommendation, and the RHD Unit's assessment.
You will receive formal written advice from the RHD Unit about your application once the Dean makes a formal decision. However, you should not wait for that written advice before commencing your research studies. Your Application for Admission and Scholarship includes your commencement of candidature date. Ideally, the school should send your application and its recommendation to the RHD Unit at least two (2) weeks before your nominated commencement date so that your student enrolment can be activated in a timely manner - four (4) weeks if you are also applying for a scholarship.
