The UQ Graduate School instituted the Dean's Award for Research Higher Degree Excellence in 1998.  This award gives formal recognition to outstanding PhD and MPhil graduates who have demonstrated excellence in a research higher degree and who have been commended by advisors and independent examiners for substantial contribution to their field of research.  UQ insists that all our research higher degree theses are examined by acknowledged leaders in the relevant field, no matter where in the world those experts are.

No more than 10% of research higher degree graduates are recognised in this way each year.

Students nominated for the Dean's Award will be considered based on the following criteria:
  • International recognition of the research work
  • Impact of the research (actual and potential)
  • Publications or other outputs (e.g. creative works)
  • Any other recognition of the research quality
