UQ Research Scholarship (UQRS)

UQRS scholarships are awarded to exceptional research higher degree students that are undertaking a research project in one of UQ's research strengths

Value: AUD$23,728 per annum (2012 rate).  This rate is indexed annually.

To be eligible, you must:

  • be a domestic applicant
  • be nominated by your enrolling School/Institute. Candidates can only be nominated twice. The second nomination must be made within 12 months of the first nomination.  The nomination must be before the candidate commences their program or in the first round after they have commenced.  A candidate can be nominated again on confirmation of candidature but only if he/she has been nominated no more than once before.  In instances where the candidate is awarded a scholarship after commencement, there will be no retrospective payments of this scholarship. 
  • be in receipt of, or be eligible to receive, an Unconditional Offer of Admission
  • not already hold an externally funded living allowance scholarship of equal or greater value
  • not be eligible for an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)

Graduate School International Travel Award (GSITA)

Graduate School International Travel Awards are awarded to support overseas travel for at least one distinct study related purpose that is relevant and academically justifiable but not essential to the completion of your thesis.  Acceptable travel purposes include accessing research material or facilities that are unavailable in Australia (e.g. libraries, archives, laboratories) and working in a research environment with resources not currently available to the candidate.  This award does not support travel to attend overseas conferences, complete courses and visiting an advisory team.

Value: AUD$3000 for travel in the Pacific region (eg. Indonesia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea) and AUD$5000 for travel elsewhere in the world.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a confirmed RHD candidate enrolled full-time at UQ (part-time students are eligible to apply but must be enrolled full time while overseas)
  • Be a confirmed candidate with no overdue milestone at the time of application
  • Travel before the Thesis Review milestone 
  • Not have previously held a UQ Graduate School funded travel grant
  • Demonstrate that additional funds are available if required
  • Undertake at least 10 days of research related activity
  • Plan your departure date to be after the outcome of the travel award application is announced as retrospective funding will not be approved.

How to Apply: Submit a complete GSITA application form and GSITA budget spreadsheet by the close of the scholarship round. 

Closing dates:  24 February 2012, 18 May 2012, 17 August 2012, 16 November 2012.

Rules:

  • Travel must be completed before the 'Thesis Review' milestone
  • Travel must take place within six months of the date of the award
  • Any changes to the destination, purpose or dates of travel requires approval from the Graduate School
  • Candidates must submit a Report on Research Travel form upon their return.

National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC)

NHMRC scholarships support outstanding Australian health and medical graduates early in their career so that they can be trained to conduct research that is internationally competitive and develop a capacity for original independent research. 

To be eligible, you must:

Value: The scholarships provide stipends, leave entitlements and other allowances for consumables, relocation, and establishment. Full time postgraduate scholars undertaking their PhD are awarded a maximum of three years and those undertaking MPhil are awarded a maximum of two years. Part-time scholarships are only available to medical and dental postgraduate research scholarship holders who are undertaking dual training – postgraduate medical/dental and a PhD. The maximum period for which a part-time scholarship can be held is six years. Extensions to scholarships may be approved by NHMRC under limited exceptional circumstances.

Closing Date: UQ's internal closing date is 5pm on 29 June 2012. The Graduate School checks the applications on the NHMRC Research Grants Management System (RGMS) before endorsement.

Research Commercialisation Training Scheme (CTS)

The Research Commercialisation Training Scheme (CTS) supports domestic RHD students undertaking research commercialisation and innovation training.  The CTS covers the full cost of tuition fees for an approved Graduate Certificate program in Research Commercialisation. In addition, the CTS provides a grant of $750 per unit of study (to a maximum of $6000) to assist recipients in meeting the direct costs of undertaking the approved commercialisation training. CTS places are funded by the Federal government and awarded on the basis of performance during candidature to date and the suitability of your research project for commercialisation.

Eligibility: To receive this scholarship, you must

  • be a domestic candidate.
  • agree to enrol in an approved Graduate Certificate program on a part-time basis while concurrently enrolled in a PhD or MPhil program.  Commencement in the program must take place prior to the submission of your thesis and full-time enrollment is permitted in these cases.  Students who continue in the program following thesis submission must complete the coursework within 6 months of the date of submission.
  • not previously have completed a Graduate Certificate program in research commercialisation training.

CTS Rules:

  • Recipients must use the application form provided by the University.
  • Recipients must use the CTS for the research commercialisation training outlined in the application and approved by the Dean, UQ Graduate School.
  • Recipients must commence the CTS training in the semester specified in the CTS offer.
  • Recipients must seek the approval of the Dean, UQ Graduate School, to vary the approved research commercialisation training. If approved, the value of the grant may be adjusted to reflect the variation.
  • Recipients cease to be entitled to CTS tuition fee support when one of the following applies:
    • 24 months after commencing the CTS training; or
    • 6 months after submitting the RHD thesis for examination; or
    • after 31 December 2012.
  • Recipients must repay to UQ:
    • the part of the grant that is equal to the number of units not enrolled in if the Graduate Certificate is not completed by the approved date, and
    • any funds that The University deems were not used for the commercialisation training approved by the Dean, UQ Graduate School.
