Commercialisation Training Scheme


Purpose of Scheme

The Commercialisation Training Scheme (CTS) can provide funding for PhD and MPhil candidates to undertake a Graduate Certificate in Research Commercialisation (GCResComm) or a Graduate Certificate in Technology and Innovation Management (GCTIM) at UQ.  The purpose of the CTS is to equip research candidates with the skills, knowledge and experience to bring research-based ideas, inventions and innovations to market.

Commercialisation Training Scheme support funds the tuition fees for the GCResComm or GCTIM and may provide a living allowance scholarship.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the CTS support you must:
 
  1. be a domestic student (Australian citizen, Permanent Resident or New Zealand citizen); and
  2. be a full time confirmed PhD or MPhil candidate; and
  3. be enrolled on a part time basis and concurrently with your RHD program; or
  4. undertake the Graduate Certificate on a full time basis immediately following submission of the thesis for examination; and
  5. not have previously completed commercialisation training.
  PhD Candidates must:
  • have been admitted to confirmed candidature within 18 months of full-time equivalent (FTE) study, and
  • be in their 2nd or 3rd year of candidature, and
  • be making above average progress, and
  • be on track to submit their thesis for examination within the equivalent of four (4) years of full time enrolment.
MPhil Candidates must:
  • have been admitted to confirmed candidature within 9 months of FTE study, and
  • be in their 1st or 2nd year of candidature, and
  • be making above average progress, and
  • be on track to submit their thesis for examination within the equivalent of two (2) years of full time enrolment.
Selection Procedures
Preference will be given to candidates:
  • who can best demonstrate that the skills, knowledge and experience gained by completing the Graduate Certificate will bring research-based ideas, inventions and innovation to market; and
  • who are undertaking a PhD program and have the best prospects of pursuing a career that will utilise the skill, knowledge and experience gained by completing the Graduate Certificate; and
  • whose Principal Advisor and School Postgraduate Coordinator have strongly endorsed their application and certified that:
  1. the candidate is making above average progress; and 
  2. the Graduate Certificate program will not impede progress on the candidate's research or the preparation of the thesis; and
  3. the thesis is on target to be submitted within the equivalent of four year full time equivalent PhD candidature (two years for  MPhil candidature).  
Enrolment in Graduate Certificate
The Graduate Certificate can be undertaken either on a part time basis over 2 or 3 semesters or on a full time basis immediately following submission of your thesis for examination.
Commercialisation Training Scheme Scholarship
The CTS Scholarship provides a living allowance for RHD candidates undertaking the Graduate Certificate on a full time basis immediately following submission of their thesis for examination.
 
The UQ Research Scholarships General Conditions do not apply to the CTS Scholarship.
 
CTS Scholarship recipients must:
  • not undertake full time employment during the period of the CTS Scholarship
  • not be concurrently enrolled in any program other than the RHD
  • have submitted their thesis for examination by a specified date (see item 6 of Application Form).
Application Procedure

STEP 1

You need approval from the UQ Graduate School for concurrent enrolment and CTS funding.

Applications can be made any time throughout the year.

Note that in 2008, Applicants:

  • wishing to commence the Graduate Certificate program in Semester 1, 2008 must lodge their application by 11 February 2008.
  • wishing to commence the Graduate Certificate program in Semester 2, 2008 must lodge their application by 16 June 2008.
  • must have been accepted in the Graduate Certificate and their application must be endorsed by the Graduate Certificate coordinator to ensure that the candidate’s program has been/can be customised to meet the candidate’s needs.
