All University of Queensland research higher degree theses use the same order and format of contents. All candidates are to use the thesis preliminary pages template provided by the Graduate School for this purpose. Note that text inside {brackets} contains instructions to the candidate on what parts of the template should be modified: material outside these {brackets}, such as the text of the Declaration by Author, must not be modified.
The first page of the thesis is the title page. It contains the thesis title, the candidate's full name, the statement "A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor {Master} of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in {month} {year}", and the candidate's enrolling school or institute.
The second page of the thesis contains the Declaration by Author, followed by
- Statement of Contributions to Jointly Authored Works Contained in the Thesis
- Statement of Contributions by Others to the Thesis as a Whole
- Statement of Parts of the Thesis Submitted to Qualify for the Award of Another Degree
- Published Works by the Author Incorporated into the Thesis
- Additional Published Works by the Author Relevant to the Thesis but not Forming Part of it
There is a page break at this point. The following page contains the Acknowledgements, Abstract, Keywords, and Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classifications (ANZSRC).
- the Abstract provides a prose summary of your thesis, and is the only part of your thesis available to non-UQ users of the Australian Digital Theses database. If you obtain delayed or restricted access to your thesis, both your thesis and your abstract are unavailable to all users.
- the Keywords provide search terms that are entered into the UQ Library Catalogue.
- the ANZSRC provides data that link your thesis to the disciplines and discipline clusters in the Federal Government's Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative.
There is a page break at this point. This is the end point of the thesis preliminary pages template. The remaining sections of the thesis are, in order:
- Table of Contents
- List of Figures & Tables
- List of Abbreviations used in the thesis
- Main text of the thesis
- Bibliography or List of References
- Appendices (this section is optional, and should be included only if you have material which a thesis assessor may want to refer to but does not need to read to fully understand your thesis)
