It is a condition of research higher degree candidature that students enrol only in their research program.
Candidates who wish to enrol concurrently in a second program at UQ or elsewhere must seek and obtain specific written approval from the Dean, UQ Graduate School. To do this, complete the Application for Concurrent Enrolment form. In addition, you must apply directly to the UQ faculty or external university that administers the second program.
If the Dean of UQ Graduate School approves concurrent enrolment, you must be full-time in one program and part-time in the other. If you remain enrolled full-time in both programs, you may be changed to part-time candidature.
If the Dean does not approve concurrent enrolment, you must cancel your enrolment in one of the two programs. If you remain enrolled concurrently in two programs without permission, you may be withdrawn from candidature.
Special arrangements have been put in place to make it easier to enrol concurrently in certain combinations of programs, such as the PhD and Graduate Certificate concurrent enrolment scheme.
Concurrent Enrolment in Graduate Certificate Programs for Confirmed PhD Candidates
As part of its mission to equip PhD graduates with a broad array of skills for a wide range of employment opportunities and future career trajectories, the Dean, UQ Graduate School, undertakes to permit PhD candidates to enrol concurrently in Graduate Certificate programs under certain conditions.
Students may choose from areas complementary to their current discipline with the potential to focus on a subject area. Alternatively, students can choose a program that develops personal or professional skills relevant to future aspirations.
Conditions for concurrent enrolment are:
1. PhD candidature has been confirmed.
2. The Principal Advisor and School Postgraduate Coordinator have endorsed the application for concurrent enrolment and certified that:
a. the candidate is making above average progress; and
b. the proposed coursework program will not impede progress on the candidate's research or the preparation of the thesis; and
c. the thesis is on target to be submitted within the equivalent of eight full-time semesters (4 years FTE).
3. Normally, concurrent enrolment will be approved in no more than one course in the Graduate Certificate per semester.
4. For eligible students enrolment in the Graduate Certificate program will be as a Commonwealth Supported Student with students liable to pay the student contribution amount. Students with a Commonwealth supported place are required to submit a Commonwealth Assistance Form (CAF) to the University upon initial enrolment in a program or in a subsequent change of program or payment option.
a. Students must submit a paper-based CAF form available from UQ's Student Centres. Students must submit a paper-based form because Graduate Certificates are not usually Commonwealth supported programs, therefore the link accessing the CAF may not be available on mySI-net.
b. Students must select only one option - either up-front payment or the deferred payment through tax option. Students must supply their Tax File Number (TFN) if selecting deferred payment.
5. Concurrent enrolment through this arrangement is not available to International students or to domestic students enrolled in Schools of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law.
6. PhD candidates must still satisfy the entry requirements for the Graduate Certificate program.
Candidates and advisors must note that enrolment in these Graduate Certificate programs is in addition to the enrolment and the program requirements of the PhD.
Current information for all Graduate Certificate programs is available at http://www.uq.edu.au/study. At present, PhD candidates who meet the above conditions can enrol as Commonwealth supported students in the following Graduate Certificate programs.
