Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) and UQ Research Scholarships (UQRS)


Purpose: To provide a living allowance for commencing domestic research higher degree candidates (PhD or MPhil). Please refer to the UQ Research Scholarships General Conditions and the variations to the APA conditions below.

Closing Date: You can apply for admission and a scholarship on any day of the year. Please refer to Timing of Scholarship Applications

Note: If you have commenced your RHD in 2007 and expected to be able to apply for an APA or a UQRS for 2008, please contact your School to discuss your eligibility for a scholarship.


Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)
Value: $20,007 p.a. tax free and indexed annually (2008) 
Basis of Award: Academic merit, research experience and/or potential and match with University research strengths
Eligibilty:
  • You must hold or expect to hold a Bachelor's degree with Honours Class I or equivalent results
  • You must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or New Zealand citizen when applying for admission 
  • You may be of any age

If you have previously held an Australian Government research scholarship (APA or APAI) for more than six months, you are eligible for the UQRS only.

Variations to Conditions:
  • Scholarship Structure: Periods of enrolment in your research higher degree program before commencing your scholarship and while on leave without stipend from your scholarship are deducted from the duration of the scholarship.
  • Employment and Other Funding: APA holders may receive funds from other awards, scholarships or living allowances provided that the total amount is not greater than 75% of the APA stipend rate.

University of Queensland Research Scholarship (UQRS)
Value: $20,007 p.a. tax free and indexed annually (2008) 
Basis of Award: Academic merit, research experience and/or potential and match with University research strengths
Eligibility:
  • You must hold or expect to hold a Bachelor's degree with Honours Class I or IIA equivalent results
  • You must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or New Zealand citizen when applying for admission
  • You may be of any age
Application Process: Indicate that you want to be considered for a scholarship when you apply for admission on the Application for Admission and Scholarship form.  This form must be submitted to your proposed enrolling school.
