More than 4000 students are currently undertaking a research higher degree at UQ under the support and guidance of the UQ Graduate School.  The Graduate School has academic responsibility for managing admissions, providing research scholarships, supporting students during their candidature, and facilitating the examination of theses. The Graduate School coordinates year-round skills training, supports infrastructure and research facilities, and provides opportunities to accelerate career development.

Professor Zlatko Skrbis
Dean, UQ Graduate School

Professor Skrbis was appointed the Dean of the UQ Graduate School in April 2009 and is responsible for the strategic direction of graduate research training at UQ.

Professor Skrbis was previously the Deputy Head of the School of Social Science, Chair of the School Postgraduate Studies Committee, and Co-associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. He joined UQ in 2001 from the Queensland University of Technology, having gained his PhD from Flinders University as an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) scholar, and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Council of Deans and Directors of Graduate Studies in Australia.

A sociologist with an international reputation in the fields of migration, globalisation and social theory, Professor Skrbis' most recent research projects include a longitudinal study of Australian youth, a study of Australian farmers' attitudes towards globalisation and a project on migration, and refugee settlement in Australia.

 

Associate Professor Martin Crotty
Deputy Dean, UQ Graduate School

Associate Professor Marin Crotty has been a valued member of the UQ community since 2003 and has an extensive track record of innovation in the Research Higher Degree (RHD) area. 

Awarded a Commendation for Excellence in Research Higher Degree Supervision in 2011, Dr Crotty has been the Director of RHD Studies for HPRC since mid-2009. Previous leadership positions include being the Deputy Director of the Australian Studies Centre between 2003 and 2006, the History Postgraduate Coordinator in 2008 and early 2009, and Director of RHD Studies.

His research interests centre on the idea of the good citizen, war and Australian society, sports history, masculinity and education. Dr Crotty is one of the Chief Investigators on a team that was recently awarded a large ARC Linkage grant to write the history of Anzac Day.

Dr Crotty's position is a shared appointment between the Graduate School and  the School of History, Philosophy, Religion and Classics (HPRC).

 

Ms Michelle Paez-Kirkland
Director, UQ Graduate School

Michelle Paez-Kirkland has extensive management experience in both the university and corporate sectors.  Under Ms Paez-Kirkland's direction, the Graduate School is focused on providing centralised support for all RHD students and delivering them a value-added educational experience.
