Citizens and permanent residents of Australia, and New Zealand citizens are considered "Domestic" applicants. All other applicants are considered "International" and require a visa to undertake their research higher degree in Australia.
Once you have developed your research proposal, the school will invite you to apply for admission to the PhD or MPhil program. To do this, you must:
- download and complete Application for Admission and Scholarship,
- attach any other necessary forms and documents, including
- complete certified academic transcripts and official certification of degrees and diplomas awarded (unless qualifications are from the University of Queensland);
- a curriculum vitae that includes details of publications or other research or relevant work experience;
- evidence of English proficiency, if required;
- certified documentary evidence of the duration and attendance status of any previous research higher degree enrolment. Where the previous research higher degree enrolment was undertaken in Australia, students must also provide evidence of consumed research higher degree student load, measured in Equivalent Full-time Student Load (EFTSL); and
- send the completed Application for Admission and Scholarship plus the attachments to the school.
Your school reviews your application, completes the School Recommendation on an Application for Admission and Scholarship, attaches it to your application and sends it to the Research Higher Degrees (RHD) Unit. The RHD Unit assesses your application and the school's recommendation to make sure that everything complies with University policy and procedure, and prepares a recommendation for consideration by the Dean, UQ Graduate School.
The Dean, UQ Graduate School makes the formal decision to admit you as a research higher degree candidate based on your application, the school's recommendation, and the RHD Unit's assessment. You receive a formal written offer of a RHD place at UQ once the Dean makes this decision. If you requested financial support for tuition fees and/or the cost of living in your application, your formal written offer includes details of any scholarships offered to you by the UQ Graduate School.
How do I work out when I should lodge the application with the school so that I can start on my planned commencement date?
- Your school can give you advice about how quickly they will complete a school recommendation based on your application form. You should expect your school to take at least 1 week (5 working days), and possibly longer, to complete the school recommendation.
- You should expect the RHD Unit to take up to 3 weeks (15 working days) to review your complete and fully endorsed application and school recommendation. Note that the assessment of your application will be delayed if either document is incomplete or if there is a issue that must be clarified before the Dean can approve your application.
- International applicants should also expect UQ International to take up to 2 weeks (10 working days) to issue an offer of admission once the Dean approves the application. You should also work out how much time you will need to obtain your visa and make travel arrangements after receiving your offer of admission from UQ International.
For these reasons, we recommend that applicants lodge their application form with their school at least 6 weeks before
- their intended commencement date (if domestic); or
- the date they need to commence the process of obtaining a visa and making travel arrangements (if international).
If your application is urgent and processing your application cannot take this long, please let your school know about your circumstances when you lodge your application form with them.
