Information for Candidates
The University of Queensland requires all PhD and MPhil candidates to complete progress reports (see General Award Rule 4.9). In 2009, the University will introduce a milestone-based progression and development system that replaces the existing academic progress annual reports.
The three milestones are
Confirmation of candidature is already in place; the other two milestones will be phased in during 2009.
Why Change?
Research higher degree candidates are a signficant part of the research workforce and should, as early career reseachers, have opportunities to demonstrate and document their achievements in a timely, relevant and meaningful way.
- The due dates for mid-candidature review and thesis review are set by you, your advisory team, and your enrolling school/institute so that they fit your research project and your candidature [annual progress reports are issued to every candidate every May, regardless of what you're doing and where you are];
- The written and oral work to be done for each review matches the work you're doing in your research project and thesis writing [filling in an annual progress reports is an extra task];
- You receive written and verbal feedback about the work you've done and about the work you're going to do next as part of achiving each milestone.
How is the 2008 Annual Report Different?
- As 2008 is the transition year, this year's academic progress annual report asks about your next milestone's due date in 2009 or later.
- Because the confirmation of candidature milestone is already in place, provisional candidates are not required to complete the 2008 academic progress annual report. The Confirmation of Candidature form now asks for the expected submission date, and will in 2009 also ask for the mid-candidature review due date.
- There will not be any follow-up progress reports in October 2008. Instead, any following up on your report will be done through the new milestones.
