In 2012, UQ Chemical and Biological Engineering student, Emma Stratford received a scholarship that enabled her to fulfill her dreams of travelling to study in North America.

“Receiving the R.J. Gus Wiles Scholarship enhanced my study experience as it provided me with a world of opportunities I otherwise wouldn’t have had access to. I travelled to North America, where I immersed myself in university and extra-curricular life..."

"The experience opened my eyes to the international perspectives and opportunities, which an engineering degree can provide you with.”

After five decades of devoted service to the School of Chemical Engineering and wider industry, Gus Wiles’ passion for engineering education remains as strong as ever.

In 2010, the R.J. ‘Gus’ Wiles Scholarship was established, honouring a man who has had such a profound impact on generations of graduates throughout the years.

The Scholarship is funded through contributions of alumni and friends, to support two annual travel scholarships for gifted, financially disadvantaged students. International exchange at leading global engineering schools has long been a passion of Gus’s, with the scholarships allowing students to experience life-changing and transformative educational opportunities they otherwise may not have had access to.

A word from Gus Wiles

“International education is a strong interest of mine, so the ‘Gus’ Scholarship has been set up to support two annual travel scholarships for talented but financially disadvantaged ChemEng students to complete exchanges at leading global engineering schools. It’s helping smart young people to benefit from new perspectives in different cultures across the world – opportunities they wouldn’t have without this support.

My belief is that helping to transform the lives of talented young people is a worthwhile thing to be involved in – I hope you’ll join other alumni and me in making this a reality.”
