About The University of Queensland Vocational Education Centre (UQG-VEC)

The University Of Queensland and primarily the Gatton Campus has been active in the vocational education sector since 1999 when it established a small registered training organisation (RTO 1511) under the then School of Agriculture and Horticulture. Its primary role was to deliver rural skills training to students in academic courses and to isGatton Vocational Education Centre (G-VEC) prides itself on initiative and excellence the field of Vocational Educational training and assessment in rural and related sectors.sue vocational competencies. This service continued at varying levels until the restructure of the School in 2006 which led to a review of the RTO role and model.

UQG-VEC IS LAUNCHED

It was determined to separate the RTO role from a School-based model and to expand the RTO role and its services across the then Faculty of NRAVS. The Gatton Vocational Education Centre (UQG-VEC) was officiated on the 1st January 2008 under the then Faculty of Natural Resources, Agriculture and Veterinary Science. UQG-VEC’s charter was to manage the Queensland Certificate in Agriculture (QCA) program and to act as the Faculty’s Registered Training Organisation which permits the university to issue vocational qualifications registered under their scope with DET (Department of Employment and Training) and the AQTF.

EXPANSION

Since 2008 UQG-VEC has rapidly expanded both in its charter and services and now employs almost 40 staff both full time and casual. UQG-VEC has expanded its scope through TGA (Training Government Australia) to include delivery and assessment from Certificate Level 1 to Advanced Diploma (AQF level 6) across over 40 accredited qualifications, primarily in the rural, land conservation, management and animal packages. UQG-VEC also provides a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) service to those seeking recognition of their previous experience and to gain entry into academic programs via their vocational qualifications.

INNOVATION AND EXCELLENCE

A further role of UQG-VEC was to investigate and design a model to attain vocational qualifications through an academically delivered program. This model was initiated in 2009 with the alignment of the Bachelor of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology with the Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing. The model is now expanding into the academic Wildlife and Equine programs.

INDIGENOUS AND REMOTE TRAINING

UQG-VEC is also now playing a significant role in delivering accredited indigenous training across Queensland and interstate, as well as numerous other commercial training programs through direct Government funding or partnership arrangements.

PATHWAYS TO GREATER OPPORTUNITIES

On January 1, 2011, UQG-VEC began operating under the newly established Office of the Director Gatton Campus (ODGC), and is now forging stronger alliances between the Campus and regional industries, Government departments, communities and educational providers. This illustrates the emerging and progressive direction educational providers are moving towards, to provide seamless transitional pathways for students seeking greater career opportunities in their chosen disciplines.

We look forward to assisting you in seeking new opportunities.
