DATA ENVELOPMENT ANALYSIS (DEA)

DEA Symposium in London, July 2008

[If you use DEA in your work place please send me an email.]  n.avkiran@business.uq.edu.au

This homepage also mirrors links to DEA. DEA is a non-parametric technique that allows measurement of relative efficiency of decision-making units (DMUs). DMUs can be banks, university departments, general practices, supermarkets, real estate agents, hotels and so on. DEA allows you to identify the potential improvements that can be made in each DMU, as well as identify those DMUs that can be regarded as benchmarks.

The third edition of the DEA book, Productivity Analysis in the Service Sector with Data Envelopment Analysis, has been available since early May 2006. Here you can read more about the book. The book can be purchased by filling in the order form (requires a bank cheque in AUD, or a Western Union cash transfer for orders placed from overseas, or PayPal using email nejfree@gmail.com), or purchased online from a reseller.

Those who have purchased a copy of the 3rd edition of the DEA book can download data by clicking on the relevant links below. I have endeavoured to provide the data used in the chapters I have written. If the data you are looking for are not here, they are either already reproduced in the book or are in the care of the other contributors to the book (see footnotes to chapters for individuals' email addresses).

Data used in the paper published in the Journal of Banking and Finance [1999, 23(7), pp.991-1013] can be downloaded here; Australian Bank Data for 1995.

You can make a quick start to your DEA project by following this checklist.

An informative DEA site is maintained by Ali Emrouznejad. You can go directly to a tutorial by clicking DEA Tutorial.

Main commercial DEA software applications can be viewed here: DEA Solver Pro, Frontier Analyst, and Warwick DEA Software. There are also free DEA software such as DEAP and EMS.

CEPA, Centre for Efficiency & Productivity Analysis, provides a portal for working papers, grants and expertise in this area.

RESEARCH DEGREE STUDENTS

If you are in the process of preparing an application to enrol in a Masters by research or a Ph.D. degree, please see the suggested Preliminary Research Proposal Outline BEFORE you send in your application. Make sure you also check your school's specific requirements.

All postgraduate candidates (in particular those from overseas) should visit the following web sites to learn about undertaking postgraduate studies at UQ and the available services: International Students and Research.

If you are a postgraduate student starting a Masters or Ph.D. program, you may want to read Starting and Finishing Your Research Degree.

Ph.D. and Masters by research students should consult their principal supervisors for the preferred presentation style as well as the university's general guidelines. Postgraduate students should find out about their school's referencing guidelines before writing up their theses.

The University of Canterbury maintains some documents of general guidance for their postgraduate students. Below I have listed two links for your convenience. If you take the time to search other universities' web sites you are bound to find some more useful links. Make sure you follow the more specific guidelines from your supervisor and enjoy your research activities. The Research Proposal Organising your Thesis
