Global Leadership Series - The Power of Sport

“Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. Sport can awaken hope where there was previously only despair. Sport speaks to people in a language they can understand.” Nelson Mandela

Sport is not just about the players, the competition and the spectacle – it also plays an important role at the individual, community, and global level.

For the individual, sport can develop one’s personal abilities, general health and self-knowledge. It can also bring communities together and contribute to economic and social growth and improve public health.

On the global level, it can also have long-lasting positive impact on development and peace between nations. However, sport is not a solution for development problems. Culturally, it can be as complex as society and have negative side effects such as violence, corruption, discrimination, nationalism, doping and fraud. Our three guest speakers John Grant, Paul Henry and Brenden Hall will discuss the power of sport from their perspectives and how it contributes to developing communities, economies and the individual on both a local and global scale.
