Event Description
- Full Description:
- Australias best-known investigative reporter, Chris Masters, will present at The University of Queenslands School of Journalism and Communication as part of Brisbane Writers Festival, speaking about his experiences in war reporting and the process of writing Uncommon Soldier.
Chris Masters is a multi-Walkley Award winning and Logie Award winning journalist and author. In 1985, he won Australias most prestigious award in journalism, the Gold Walkley, for his Four Corners report on the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior.
His reports The Big League and The Moonlight State both led to royal commissions that helped transform the nation.
Recently Chris turned his penetrating gaze on the modern Australian soldier. Moving away from Australias ongoing fascination with the ANZAC story, he looks at the rich and illuminating present to write a character study of the modern Australian soldier - war fighter, peacekeeper, street-level diplomat and aid worker. The result of a six year immersive investigation is Uncommon Soldier (2012).
In 2012 Uncommon Soldier was announced as the winner of the Fellowship of Australian Writers National Literary Awards - Excellence in Non-fiction Award. This year it has been shortlisted in the Prime Ministers Literary Awards - Non-fiction.
After his presentation, Chris will be interviewed by a student panel and Dr John Harrison on his journalism experiences.
